أتىcame بِقُدومِwith the arrival of فاطمةَFatima البَشيرُthe herald
فكِدناso we nearly لِلسُّرورِfor joy بِذَاat this نَطيرُfly
The herald came with news of Fatima's arrival,
The harbinger came with the arrival of Fatima
So we nearly flew with joy at this.
We almost flew with joy at her coming
وفيand in فرَحٍjoy وفيand in مَرَحٍmerriment تَساوىwere equal
صَغيرُthe young القَومِthe people فيناamong us والكَبيرُand the old
And in joy and merriment were equal
Young and old among us were equal in happiness and cheer
The young and the old among our people.
And they are like stars revolving around her
وهاand here هىَshe بينَamong فِرقَتِهاher troupe كَبَدرٍlike a full moon
وهُمand they مثلُlike النُّجومِthe stars بهاaround her تَدورُrevolve
And here she is among her troupe, like a full moon,
You, the ransomed Nile's children, visited us
And they are like stars revolving around her.
Neither distance nor fatigue kept you from us
بَنيsons of النِّيلِthe Nile المُفَدَّىcherished زرتُموناyou visited us
وماand not أثنَاكمُdeterred you عَنَّاfrom us هَجيرُscorching midday heat
Sons of the cherished Nile, you have visited us,
Great thanks are due to you
And no scorching midday heat kept you from us.
When the Nile is generous to us through you
وماand not أثناكمُdeterred you تَعَبٌweariness وبُعدٌand distance
فَحُقَّso became due إليكُمto you الشُّكرُthanks الوَفيرُabundant
Nor did weariness or distance deter you,
The Nile's bounty in life is plenty
So abundant thanks are rightly due to you.
It is the epitome, its beauty enhanced
إذاif ماemphatic particle النيلُthe Nile جادَgave generously بِكُمwith you عليناupon us
فَفضلُso the bounty of النِّيلthe Nile فيin الدُّنياthe world كثيرُis great
If the Nile has bestowed you upon us,
As its necklaces adorned it
Then the Nile's bounty in this world is great.
Welcome, O daughter of the ransomed Nile
هوit التَّتمثيلُthe art of acting زادَincreased بكمthrough you جَمالاًin beauty
كماjust as زانتadorned قلائِدَهاtheir necklaces النُّحورُthe necks
Acting itself has gained beauty through you,
The zealous Basha and his guards welcome you
Just as necks have adorned their necklaces.
You arrived under the auspicious constellation
تُرَحِّبُwelcomes ياO ابنةَdaughter of النيلِthe Nile المُفَدَّىcherished
بِكِto you الحَمراal-Hamra وبَاشاهاand its pasha الغَيورُdevoted
O daughter of the cherished Nile, you are welcomed
As the bright stars go on their course
By al-Hamra and its devoted pasha.
When asked who surpasses in nobility and virtue
حلَلَتُمyou alighted فيduring المَسيرٍthe journey بِبُرجِin a constellation of سَعدٍgood fortune
كذاكlikewise النَّيِّراتُthe heavenly lights إذاwhen تَسيرُthey travel
On your journey, you alighted in an auspicious constellation,
The most righteous would point to you
As do the heavenly lights when they travel.
Stay comfortably in its field

If ever it is asked, 'Who among humankind is peerless
For hearts have opened wide to welcome you
In merits?' then hands point to him.
Yes, they said your stay is short
فَطِيبيso be at ease بينwithin ساحَتِهhis grounds مُقاماًin your stay
فقدfor indeed رحُبَتhave opened wide بمقدمِكِat your arrival الصُّدورُthe breasts

So enjoy a pleasant stay within his grounds,
I told them, your little is plenty to us
For hearts have opened wide at your arrival.
Greet each year with a visit

Yes, they said, 'Your stay is short,'
Perhaps one day we might visit you
So I told them, 'A little of you is a great deal.'
You will find only smiling faces
وحَيِّيand greet بِالزِّيارَةِwith a visit كلَّevery عامٍyear
عَسىperhaps يوماone day كذَاكَlikewise لَكُمto you نَزُورُwe pay a visit

And greet us with a visit every year;
No frowns or gloom in our midst
Perhaps one day we may likewise visit you.
And I bid you farewell in closing

وماand not فيناamong us عَبوسٌa scowling person قَمطريرُgrim
For you will find nothing but a smiling face,
As fragrance wafts from the garden
And none among us is scowling and grim.

And I offer you a greeting in closing,
Like fragrance that has wafted from a garden.
