يَا ذَا الَّذِي عِندَهُ حَيَاتِي

يَا ذَا الَّذِي عِندَهُ حَيَاتِي

بِاللهِ بِاللهِ أَبقِ عَنِّي

بِاللهِ بِاللهِ أَبقِ عَنِّي

O you in whose keeping my life lies,

O you in whose hands lies my life

By God, by God, spare me!

I implore you, I implore you spare me

ويومَ إِذ زَارَني رِفَاقي

ويومَ إِذ زَارَني رِفَاقي

وَشَاهَدُوني قَريبَ دَفنِ

وَشَاهَدُوني قَريبَ دَفنِ

And on the day when my companions visited me

And when my friends came to visit me

and saw me close to burial,

And saw me nearing my grave

أَبَكَتهمُ حَالتي جَمِيعاً

أَبَكَتهمُ حَالتي جَمِيعاً

لَمَّا رَأونِي كَمَا رَأونِي

لَمَّا رَأونِي كَمَا رَأونِي

my condition made them all weep

My condition made them all weep

when they saw me as they did.

When they saw me as they saw me

وَقَد تَمَنَّوا سُلُوَّ قَلبِي

وَقَد تَمَنَّوا سُلُوَّ قَلبِي

لاَ حَقَّقَ اللهُ ذَا التَّمَنِّي

لاَ حَقَّقَ اللهُ ذَا التَّمَنِّي

And they wished my heart would forget its love—

And they wished to comfort my heart

may God not fulfill that wish!

But God did not fulfill that wish

وَحَقَّقَ اللهُ عَن قَريبٍ

وَحَقَّقَ اللهُ عَن قَريبٍ

وصلَ حبيبي ونورُ عَيني

وصلَ حبيبي ونورُ عَيني

And may God soon grant

Yet soon, God fulfilled

union with my beloved, the light of my eye.

My beloved came, the light of my eyes

قد كانَ ظَنِّي بِكُم صحِيحاً

قد كانَ ظَنِّي بِكُم صحِيحاً

وَالآنَ وَاللهِ خَابَ ظَنِّي

وَالآنَ وَاللهِ خَابَ ظَنِّي

My hopes in you had been well founded;

My thoughts about you were true

but now, by God, my hopes are dashed.

And now, by God, my thoughts were wrong
