May God prolong the caliph’s days,
May Allah prolong the days of the Caliph,
And perpetuate the lofty reign of bounty,
And make eternal the state of sublime virtue,

وحُكمُكand your decree سيّديmy lord لنwill not أَستَنِيفَهI contest it (uncertain form)
From you came to me a decree to be obeyed,
Your authoritative command has come to me,
And your decree, my lord, I shall not contest.
And your rule, my master, I shall not repeat,
ولكنand yet سَيِّديmy lord أدرَىmore aware بِحَاليof my condition

Yet my lord knows my condition better,
But my master knows best my condition—
Especially on a delightful night like mine:
Especially on my difficult night.

Beauties like stars circle around me,
The stars circle around me like Hassan
With glances powerful yet languid,
With powerful, yet tender, glances,

And a cup I cannot resist,
And a cup I cannot patiently endure
From the cupbearer, even if it passes lightly.
From the cupbearer though it circles gently.
