It is a victory that has come after a victory.
It is a victory that came after victory
And so the horizon: one star after another
And so is the horizon, star after star

Follows in succession, until there comes
Continuing until the dawn rises
Its hour of radiance, and it shines forth as dawn.
When it is time for it to shine brightly

Such is the lot of every sinful aggressor:
Such is the way of every wicked transgressor
He sowed evil, and so he reaps evil.
Who planted evil and reaped evil

Corsica, the home of lions, refuses
To see a den for foxes within her.
To see dens for foxes within it

The fortunes of nations are like those of individuals:
The fortunes of individuals are like the fortunes of nations
At times they suffer, and at times they prosper.
Now suffering, now prospering

It added no certainty to their certainty,
It did not increase their certainty beyond certainty
For, before it occurred, they knew it full well.
For with it, before it happened, they were most knowing

Rather, it brought them a banner of triumph
Rather, it brought them a banner of victory
That had often come to him, in secret and openly.
After it had come to them secretly and openly

And if the beginning was a clear conquest,
And if the beginning was a clear conquest
Then the ending is all the more surely so.
Then the ending is even more deserving

The omen was ill for them, for they had thought her
Evil befell them, for they thought it
A palace for themselves, but found it a grave.
Would be a palace for them, but found it a grave

The secret of this life is obscure; no
The secret of life is obscure, so the youth
Man, however long he lives, knows life's secret.
Does not know life's secret until he lives it secretly

How many a striver walks at a swift pace,
How many glorious ones walk quickly
While he is dragged inexorably toward death and doom.
Yet are dragged to ruin and decay

An army hemmed them in there, taking them captive;
They surrounded them there with a host of captives
They sank fang and claw into the wolves.
Who had planted fangs and claws in the wolves

They made for her, hungry, but
They resolved while hungry, but
Were fed colocynth, bitter sap, and aloe.
Were fed bitterness, poison, and patience

No harm comes to the beauty from being wooed
A base suitor does no harm to the beautiful one
By a dullard whose soul later served as her bride-price.
If her spirit remains aloof from him afterwards

They sought her back as their resting place;
They sought her back as a dwelling place
So she lent them her belly as their resting place.
So she lent them her belly as a dwelling place

So condolences, condolences to their Hitler!
As consolation for their defeat, consolation
May God magnify your reward for your victory!
May God magnify your reward in victory

They screened the sky from them with a host
They veiled the sky from them with an army
Raining thunderbolts upon them, one after another.
Raining thunderbolts down upon them

Then they shut against them every gate
Then they closed upon them every door
Of hoped-for escape, by land and sea.
To hoped-for salvation, by land and sea

And they came upon them as though they were at peace:
And came to them as if in peace
Have you seen doves when they sight a falcon?
Have you seen a pigeon sight a falcon?

وقتيلٌand a slain man لمdid not يُغنِهمsuffice them عنهُin his stead أسرىcaptives
So no slain man sufficed in place of a captive,
So a prisoner was no use to a casualty
Nor did captives suffice them in place of a slain man.
And a casualty did not avail them a prisoner

They surrounded them and called: 'Come,
They glared at them and cried, "Surrender!"
And know there is no escape from your destruction!'
"And know that from your destruction there is no escape"

People of understanding used to say aloud:
What the people of resolve said openly

They lived upon her only a little while,
They did not live above it except briefly
Which, in the end, they reckoned an age.
In the end they thought it an age
