رجَعتُI returned لنفسِيto myself فاتَّهمَتُthen I doubted حَصَاتيmy judgment
وماand not خِلتُI thought أنِّيthat I قدmight تَضِيعُbe lost شَكَاتيmy complaint
I turned back to myself and doubted my judgment.
I returned to myself, so I blamed my pebbles,
And I did not think my complaint might be lost.
And I knew that soon my sorrows would scatter.
حَسِبتُI thought حَياتيmy life تبقَىendures بعدَafter بلاَئِهاits ordeal
وناديتُand I called قَوميmy people فاحتَسَبتُthen I reckoned as lost حَياتيmy life
I thought my life would endure after its ordeal.
I thought my life would remain after its afflictions,
And I called to my people, then reckoned my life lost.
And I called my people, so I counted my life.
رَمونِيthey accused me بعُقمٍof barrenness فيin الشَّبَابyouth ولَيتَنِيand I wish
رَمونيthey accused me بعُقمٍof barrenness عِندat قُربِthe approach of مَماتِيmy death
They accused me of barrenness in youth, and I wish
They accused me of barrenness in my youth, if only
they had accused me of barrenness as my death drew near.
They had accused me of barrenness nearing my death.
جَزعتُI grieved لهover it منbecause of مُفجِعِheartrending القَولِthe words لَيتنِيif only I
عَقِمتُI was barren فلمso did not أجزَعI grieve لقولِat the words of عُدَاتِيmy enemies
I grieved over it because of those heartrending words; if only I
I grieved for him from the grief of words, if only
had been barren—then I would not have grieved at my enemies' words.
I was barren, so I would not grieve the words of my enemies.
