I long for Egypt, though I am not from Egypt.

But the bird of the heart knows its nest best.

Were it not for love of Egypt and my love for her people,

I would not have been in one country and come to be in another.

A country just as her people's happiness would wish,

And a land trailing its hem in green robes.

A country where Islam raises its head,

And she has hoisted above it the banner of victory.

If I said my love for my homeland surpassed my love for her,

I would make an open claim that my secret heart contradicted.

Among her sons I met none but a noble man,

Whose face shone with cheerfulness and gladness.

She shows you, among the masters of eloquence in her garden,

    Nightingales—if nightingales could sing enchantment.

When the pens sway their flanks upon the page,

In their hands, they suffice instead of bright swords and dusky spears.

And among her statesmen, if calamity's night grows dark,

Then among them the faces of counsel unveil a full moon.

And noble character, its fragrance vying

With flowers, even when the breeze blows over the flowers.

And here are her men of learning, pouring forth

As oceans—if the sea were free from ebb.

God keep you, dear Egypt, when

I leave Egypt, leaving my heart in Egypt.

God help me, dear Egypt, whenever

My gaze turns back toward your enchanting vista.

Whenever I see the Nile flowing, I think it

Runs with my tears at the nearness of parting from her.

And if my eye falls upon one of her pyramids,

I feel it as a mountain of grief anchored upon my chest.

God help me, dear Egypt, when

I wipe away my tears while the train bears us through the night.

I seem to see the cauldrons of its heart boiling

In rage—and its rage falls on no one but me.

It growls angrily after snatching me away,

And with me it goes, folding up the earth through the barren wilderness.

God keep you, dear Egypt, whenever

I seek refuge in my patience—if any patience remains.

Shall I leave happiness and bliss behind in Egypt,

And go to suffer where no one knows?

Shall I depart from Egypt and head for Morocco—

Misery, by the life of the True One, for the free poet?

Shall I be buried alive, O people, in my homeland?

Yes, it is my grave; yes, it is my grave.

For a grave holds nothing but death and desolation,

And both are found in a life of constraint and oppression.

Love of Egypt made me forget love of a homeland that has become

A place where forsaking it is my union, and union with it my estrangement.

It rose so high that it saw the West beneath it,

And spread its two wings and fluttered like a falcon.

    But as fate willed—and everything

That God's command ordains among His creation comes to pass—

We see it descending, time after time,

Until it fell; now it has settled at the bottom.

I poured my tears upon my chest for its sake,

Yet pouring my tears upon my chest is not enough.

We closed our eyelids upon the cradle of delusion,

But the wronged man never closes an eyelid over an unavenged wrong.

They made their grudges the judges when they took control,

So they were base in litigation, men of guile.

An ember of hidden longing torments me,

So I seek refuge in remembrance, and it flares up from embers.

    وما حيلةُ المَغلوبِ منهُ على أمرِ

    I have been overpowered in my affairs, and my Lord is witness;

What recourse has one overpowered in his affairs?

Yet its changing fortunes through time are like the sea:

If the sea's flood tide lasts long, an ebb is inevitable.

My dear friends, grant me your pardon, and know

That, by God's truth, I am most deserving of pardon.

What I sigh forth is not poetry,

But the molten essence of emotions in verse.
