    هَذي الحقِيقَةُ لا حِكَاية حَاكِ

    I listened to no complaint from a complainant;

this is the truth, not a storyteller's tale.

We used to boast that we were poets, out of

    excessive vanity and scant understanding.

And we would say: “That is our glory; who

    can string pearls upon threads?”

And we trailed imagination's hem in conceit, reckoning

ourselves on a level with the celestial spheres.

Yet the title we boasted of, exalting ourselves

    above Kaywan and above Simak,

the great refused to count among their titles—

men like the inspired, discerning al-Tihami.

I have not forgotten a day we spent amid

the laughter of flowers beside a weeping brook.

The birds were preaching from the pulpits of branches

that joined the myrtle's softness to the fragrance of arak.

We circled our master like a halo's ring

around a full moon shining in deep darkness,

    exchanging choice anecdotes in conversation,

soaring as a star soars in the celestial spheres.

And the turns of our talk led to astonishment

at an unarmed man prevailing over an armed one.

The master then quoted a verse summing up

the creed of sages and ascetics:

“Were His decrees not inevitable, never would

the birds of the air fall into snares.”

You heeded a summons from the caller of idle curiosity,

who spread idle curiosity like nets for its devotees.

And you spoke out of a silence in which my temple

had complained of my scratching fingernail:

“Were His decrees not inevitable, never would

the winds of ruin sweep away their strength.”

He answered me at once: “Rather, say: never would

the strong be forsaken, nor the weeping man triumph.”

I fell mute from sheer bewilderment, like one stricken

with a seizure, and remained motionless.

I kept his company for twenty years, yet never fully

knew him—O soul, how strong you are!

I know him on the day of lance-combat, felling

those who wield lances and the deadly sword.

    منه العيون من الخشوع بواك

    I know him keeping prayerful vigil in the night's deep gloom;

because of him, eyes weep in reverence.

I know him forgiving the offender, and full of

forbearance toward the habitual liar of dubious ways.

    مِنه العيُونُ مِن الخشُوع بَوَاك

    I know him keeping prayerful vigil in the night's deep gloom;

because of him, eyes weep in reverence.

I know him, in his noble character and the sweetness

of his nature, to hold an angel's spirit.

I know him as a rigorous investigator in every science,

and a debater whenever the wind of contention blows.

I know him as an unfailing doer of every virtue,

and a steadfast shunner of all else—may I be his ransom!

I know him as the West's boast before the East,

among its non-Arabs, Arabs, and Turks.

But I did not know that he was a poet

like Ibn al-Husayn and those who emulate him.

To God belong marvels in this existence

whose secrets lie far beyond comprehension.

O choicest of my verses, brightest of my odes,

    do not boast after this—beware!

And distinguish yourself, if you appear, only when

Beauty has clothed him in the robe of your adornments.

And if one day you stand before him, lay

your mouth upon his sandal, if he condescends.

This is generosity—indeed, its furthest reaches!

Or have your eyes not seen the grace of generosity?

    فَبِأخذِهَا مِنِّي يَرُوم فَكَاكي

    He buys from me a commodity he already possesses;

so, by taking it from me, he seeks my release.

God—exalted be His majesty—has made him independent of

you; but God has not made you independent of him.

You, but for him, would have been a homeless wanderer,

while he, but for you, would never have been troubled.

Do not exalt me now that I have understood what

I have understood, my soul—may I be your ransom!

And adorn yourself with eloquence's ornaments, and unveil

a countenance radiant with your light.

Then perhaps, if good fortune is decreed for you,

he will turn toward you with his smiling face.
