في أيِّ قافِيةٍ وبحرٍ َأنظِمُ
I have sought to describe you—a duty that must be met—
I have sought to describe you, and this is a duty;
yet in what rhyme and meter shall I compose?
In what rhyme and meter shall I compose?

وبأيِّ معنىً يا تُرى أصِفُ الذي

And with what meaning, one wonders, can I describe the one
And with what meaning, I wonder, can I describe one
who, when praised, surpasses every meaning?
Who surpasses every meaning used to describe him?

Will verse betray me today, though I am
Will poetry betray me today, though I am
lord of verse, and sovereign over rhymes?
A master of poetry, ruling over rhymes?

No—by your worth, it shall not be; for these
No, by your honor, that shall not be; these are
are your fair qualities, of which I sing.
Your fairest qualities, which I sing.

Indeed, the virtues—innate in you—
Indeed, the virtues that are innate in you
are the bracelet, and you the wrist it clasps.
Are the bracelet, and you are their wrist.

O Pasha al-Tihami, you whose
preeminence throughout the worlds,
Rank has gained precedence in all the worlds,

the Noble Sanctuary and its Corner longed for you,
The Noble Sanctuary and its corner have longed for you,
and the Hatim and Zamzam longed for the sight of you.
And the Hatim and Zamzam have longed for your countenance.

Your forefather called you, and you heeded his summons,
And your grandfather called you, and you listened to his call
your heart all the while brimming with burning yearning.
For a time, your heart filled with burning longing.

Does the heart shed tears while longing pulls,
The heart weeps, and yearning draws you on,
and tears pour down from passion’s excess?
And tears stream from an excess of ardent love.

How many a pilgrimage season passed—yet only
How many a pilgrimage season has passed! But only
through you did this season trail the robe of pride.
Through you has this season trailed the train of pride.

وأرَى بعيني البَدرَ حولَهُ أنجُمُ
If only I had been there, present,
Would that I had been present there,
to see with my own eyes the full moon ringed by stars.
And seen with my own eyes the full moon encircled by stars.

Would that my master would send me on before him—
And my lord's wish is to send me ahead of him,
I, the humble servant, the poet who speaks.
And I am the humble servant, the poet, the speaker.

When a great man sets out toward a destination,
Indeed, when a great man sets out toward a destination,
he must have a servant going before him.
He must have a servant who goes ahead of him.

He is present if his master calls his name;
He is at hand, whether called by name
otherwise, he wins the bounty of a great reward.
Or not, for he reaps his mighty reward.

Let our lord pardon and forgive me if I have
And let our master pardon and forgive me if I
ventured upon what once made me hold back.
Have ventured where I once held back.

That is only because I am certain
That is only because I am certain
that the forbearing, even when provoked, still forbears.
That a forbearing man, even when displeased, remains forbearing.

By God, were it not that after your departure
By God, were it not that, after you are gone,
I remain like a bereaved mother whose heart aches,
I am left like a bereaved mother whose heart aches,

And the world, with all its spaciousness, closes in on me,
and its light turns dark within my eyes,
And its light grows dark in my eyes,

and I spend the night in anguish that tears my heart apart
And I pass the night in grief that rends my soul,
if you should vanish from my sight—
If you have vanished from my sight,

I would not seek what I do not understand:
I would not make a request, unsure
whether I shall regret it afterward, or not.
Whether I would regret it or not.

But my hope in you always overcomes
But my hope in you always overcomes
my fear of your power, which is greater still.
My fear of your might, which is supreme.

So remain steadfast in doing what is gracious,
So remain steadfast in doing good,
and never tire of graciousness and its practice.
For you never tire of goodness and its practice.

Promise us that—even if only for a coming year—
And do promise that, even for the coming year;
and when you promise, surely I shall enter ihram.
For if you promise, I shall surely be in ihram.

And may you go beneath God’s shelter, enclosing you,
And may you go within God's shelter, with Him surrounding you,
with the wing of His protection spread over your return.
And may the wing of His protection spread over you on your return.
