أتيتَ بِإِذنٍ أم أتيتَ بلا إذنِ

أتيتَ بِإِذنٍ أم أتيتَ بلا إذنِ

إذا لم يَكُن إذنٌ بِرَبِّكَ فاترُكني

إذا لم يَكُن إذنٌ بِرَبِّكَ فاترُكني

Have you come with permission, or have you come without permission?

Did you come with permission or did you come without permission

If there is no permission, for your Lord's sake, leave me.

If there is no permission from your Lord then leave me

أبوكَ على علمٍ بأنَّكَ فاتِني

أبوكَ على علمٍ بأنَّكَ فاتِني

ويَعلَمُ كلَّ العِلمِ وا أسَفِي أنِّي

ويَعلَمُ كلَّ العِلمِ وا أسَفِي أنِّي

Your father knows that you captivate me,

Your father knows that you have infatuated me

And he knows full well—alas for me!—that I...

And He knows all knowledge, and woe is me

ولي معَهُ في الوُدِّ خيرُ علاقَةٍ

ولي معَهُ في الوُدِّ خيرُ علاقَةٍ

قدِ احتُرِمَت منه كما احتُرِمَت مِنِّي

قدِ احتُرِمَت منه كما احتُرِمَت مِنِّي

And I share with him the finest bond of affection,

And I have the best relationship with him in affection

It has been honored by him, just as it has been honored by me.

I have been respected by him as I have been respected by you

فأَنتَ تراني في لِقائِكَ خائِفاً

فأَنتَ تراني في لِقائِكَ خائِفاً

لِكَى لا يَحومُ الشَّكُّ منهُ على ذِهن

لِكَى لا يَحومُ الشَّكُّ منهُ على ذِهن

So you see me afraid when I meet you,

So you see me afraid in your meeting

Lest suspicion on his part hover over a mind.

So that no doubts arise in his mind

لِذاكَ وإِرضاءُ الضَّميرِ مُحَتَّمٌ

لِذاكَ وإِرضاءُ الضَّميرِ مُحَتَّمٌ

إذا سادَكَ الإعراضُ مِنِّىَ فاعذِرنِى

إذا سادَكَ الإعراضُ مِنِّىَ فاعذِرنِى

For that reason—and satisfying the conscience is imperative—

Therefore satisfying the conscience is imperative

If my turning away overwhelms you, then forgive me.

If indifference from me overcomes you then excuse me

ويعلمُ رَبِّي ما انطَوَيتُ عليه مِن

ويعلمُ رَبِّي ما انطَوَيتُ عليه مِن

غَرامِكَ في قلبي المُعَذّبِ لَكِنِي

غَرامِكَ في قلبي المُعَذّبِ لَكِنِي

And my Lord knows what I harbor of
