هو لي خلٌ ودود

O son of ʿAbd Allāh, O you who

O son of Abdullah, O you who

are my loving, intimate friend,

are a loving friend to me,

يا ترى هل أنت مثلي

يا ترى هل أنت مثلي

حافظٌ تلك العهود

حافظٌ تلك العهود

I wonder: are you, like me,

I wonder, are you, like me,

faithful to those pledges?

keeping those pledges?

أنا في فاسٍ ولكن

أنا في فاسٍ ولكن

عندكم قلبي ثوى

عندكم قلبي ثوى

I am in Fez, and yet

I am in Fez, but

my heart has settled among you,

my heart has stayed with you,

حيث إخوانُ الصفا

حيث إخوانُ الصفا

حيثُ أربابُ الثرا

حيثُ أربابُ الثرا

where the Brethren of Purity are,

where the brethren of purity dwell,

where the lords of the earth are.

where the men of wealth dwell.

يا شقيق الروح قل لي

يا شقيق الروح قل لي

هل نسيت العهد مني

هل نسيت العهد مني

O kindred soul, tell me:

O brother of my soul, tell me:

have you forgotten the pledge I gave you

وتحاشيت لقائي

وتحاشيت لقائي

حيث إني حيث إني

and shunned meeting me

and avoided meeting me,

because I—because I—

تبت من خمرٍ إلى الل

هِ وما لي لا أتوب

repented of wine unto Go—

have turned from wine in repentance to God?

It robs me of my time and wealth;

after it, my body melts away.

God has endowed him with a mystery,
