A loyal friend's greeting be upon you,

strengthened by his sincerity and respect.

    أتاهُ فألفاهُ وذاكَ مَرَامُهُ

    The greeting of a brother who yearns for his brother's greeting;

it reached him, and he found it—just what he desired.

It reached him when the hand of distance had kindled his longing,

so its blaze grew fiercer, fed by buried embers.

To you, Abu al-Abbas—and God is witness—

a greeting from a heart whose reins are in your hands.

For the loyal, no pleasure compares with loyalty,

especially one whose passion is for noble pursuits,

such as you, O companion of noble virtues.

And one like you is a noble chief whose sword is never blunted.

And one like you is so graciously gentle in manner

that his stature is hidden from the dull-witted.

So may you ever graze in the garden of learning and poetry,

with its bounty yours to pluck and its fragrance to breathe.
