    Your stature, O beautiful one,

Is like a branch as it sways.

    And your languid gaze

Has shot me with its arrow.

    Your swaying form,

    And your potent beauty,

    And your deadly gaze

    Captivate the children of man.

My beloved, O spirit of the heart,

My beloved, O all that is desired,

My beloved, O desire of God's servants,

My beloved, O all that is desired,

Through union, revive the one who does not

    Attain union with you.

    And heed none but

    A Lord of immense majesty.

He has endowed you with beauty

    And has granted you honor;

So give Him thanks for that,

And be gentle with this love-distraught man.

Be gentle with him, for he

    Holds a favorable opinion

Of you—so surely prove it true,

O you who put young men to shame!

    وحُسنَكَ الشَفيعُ

    Show kindness, O wondrous one,

    With your beauty as intercessor;

And God does not let go to waste

The reward of those who show kindness.

    For God's sake, my beloved,

For God's sake, pity a sorrowful man

    Who has no sins,

    Unless my passion be one.

    حتَّى زادَ يا رَشا

    His heart had been unscathed

    Until his longing grew, O gazelle;

For he saw you and grew intoxicated

    By your enchanting beauty.

    God help lovers,

    Especially those who encounter

The like of what I encounter

    Of the ordeal of humiliation.

They have said: What has befallen him?

    Why do we see him

    Crying, Ah, ah,

    Like a bewildered, distraught lover?

    I told them: Leave me

    And my sorrowful heart,

    دَهاني ما دَهاني

    And my streaming tears;

What has befallen me has befallen me.

    Death's calamities and love

Are all the same to me.

So tell whoever hopes for a cure:

Alas for you—what suffering is yours!

    Love is a difficult thing,

And love is bitter and sweet,

    And love is love itself—

    Love, my brothers!

    تَقبيحُ ما سِواهُ

    Love's ultimate end

    Is to make everything else seem ugly;

    And love has no cure,

    For me, but drawing near.

    O you beautiful ones,

Why do you deem them forfeit—

    The souls in your presence—

Though none of us is guilty?

    God has ordained for

    Whomever He afflicts with yearning:

    To endure estrangement, and not

    Complain of the gazelles' hurt.

If he finds them weary of him,

He says: There is no might, nor...

    And bears love without

    Revealing what he suffers.

    For God's sake, my master,

For God's sake, spare my heart!

    What are these tribulations?

    Love has wasted me away.

    By your wondrous beauty,

    And your lofty rank,

    And your unattainable union,

Visit me, for I am suffering.

    Visit me when the physician

    Is left with no answer,

    And says: This is strange!

And that was when he saw me.

    The physician felt my hand

And said that my death was near:

    هُبُّوا إلى الأَكفَانِ

    No medicine can heal;

    Hasten to the shrouds!

Oh, the falsehood of what you claimed,

And the ignorance of what you knew,

And of what you based your judgment on!

You have uttered an outrageous falsehood.

    O physician,

The ways of love are strange.

    If my beloved visited me,

I would witness it with my own eyes.

    حَيَاتُهُ مُحَالُ

    Visit me when they say:

    His living is impossible;

    Love is a killer.

Perhaps you may still find me.

    O humankind,

    Is all this love?

    مِتُّ منَ الوجدانِ

    Peace be upon you;

    I have died of passion.

Visit me when my death is announced

By the one who forbade me,

    Who thought I could forget.

Far be it from love, far be it from me!

    Visit me when my brothers

    Weep around my body,

    Kissing my forehead

In the burning pain of loss.

Visit me with my loved ones

As they stand at the door,

    Weeping with sobs

    And streaming tears.

    Visit me when they accompany

My funeral bier and follow it,

And all my family bids farewell,

Together with my band of brothers.

    Visit me when the righteous

    Walk before my bier,

    And invocations rise

    To the One, the All-Merciful.

Visit me when they give the call

    And announce the prayer,

    And afterward they have set

Both hands firmly upon my bier.

    Visit me when they arrive

    At the grave, then lower

    My bier, and that man

Has untied my shrouds for me.

Visit me when they prompt me,

    After they have buried me,

    And afterward depart—

    Oh, the loneliness of man!

    يَقُولُ سِر يَا وَلَدِي

    Visit me when my father

    Says: Go, my son;

    حُبِيت بِالرِّضوَانِ

    In the Garden of Eternity, abide;

You have been granted divine favor.

    He cries: Oh, my sorrows!

Oh, how searing is what has befallen me!

    I am content, my brothers,

    With the All-Merciful's decree.

    Visit me when my enemies

Have rejoiced as much as they wish,

And some of them have come

And confirmed that I am gone.

    مِن شَرِّهِ استَرَحنَا

    You say: We have rejoiced;

    We are relieved of his evil;

    فَنَحنُ فِي أَمَانِ

    Had he lived, we would have been disgraced;

    Now we are safe.

    Visit me when al-Bakkari

Spends the night with flowing tears,

    Composing in the predawn hours

    Some of his enchanting verse.

    He labors over composing it,

And wonders, when he finishes it,

    Who will send it

To him, from among my brothers?

    لا سِيَما في ذا البَلَد

    But he finds no one,

    Especially in this town;

The market for poetry has slumped,

And has come to suffer like me.

    Alas for me then,

    There in my resting place!

I cry out at that moment:

    Oh, the shame of eloquence!

Were I still above the earth,

    I would proclaim among humankind

    The superiority of all poets

    Over the children of man.

    Visit me when Ibn Hasan

    Recites his lovely verse

    Before his mellow-voiced friend,

    And seeks to meet me.

    Visit me when al-Abbas

    Amazes the people:

    His weeping is beyond measure

From the depth of his sorrows.

    Visit me when Abd al-Jalil

    Says: O finest of friends,

Never will you find my equal

    Among friends devoted to you.

    Visit where Abd al-Qadir

    Weeps with pure tears

    Over the loyalty now past

    From bygone times.

    Visit me when Muhammad

    Has been overcome by grief,

    And his reason is lost,

    Like a bewildered, distraught lover.

O my master, do you not see

    My state among humankind?

    All that has befallen me

    Was not in my reckoning.

    O desire of souls,

    O wine of cups,

    O joy of the bride,

May it please you that I am perishing.
