قالوا المَعَرِّي كافرُ

قلتُ المَعرِّي مُؤمِنُ

They said al-Ma'arri is an unbeliever

I said al-Ma'arri is a believer

لكن تَمَكَّنَ فيكمُ

داءٌ لَعَمري مُزمِنُ

But an chronic illness has taken hold among you

By my life, it is chronic

لم تُؤمِنوا إلا لِتا

بِع دينِكم إِن تُؤمِنوا

You would not believe except to

Follow your religion, if you were to believe

يا مُبصرينَ وفي بصَا

ئِرهِم عَماها يَكمُنُ

O' clear-sighted ones, yet in their insights

Blindness lies hidden

قوموا اذهبوا وليَبقَ من

كُم شارِبٌ أو مُدمِنُ

Arise and go, and let there remain of

You neither a drinker nor an addict
