In submission—and one such as I takes pride in submission—

to him whose command has brought the sea into being on dry land.

    فلِلَّهِ من بَحرٍ يُطِلُّ على بَحرِ

    You have gained honor by standing at my bank;

by God, what a sea looking out upon a sea!

Indeed, this is no mere standing beside me; rather,

your sandals belong to a sea overlooking a sea.

The strangest thing I saw from you was a smile,

as though you had discovered my secret.

As though you knew that I had come to mirror

some of your qualities, too exalted to be numbered.

The waves clash within me, as though they

portray your hand in generosity and kindness.

My water ripples, as you behold,

like the rippling water of gladness upon your pearly face.

When the bright stars are reflected within me,

through them I smile, baring teeth whose beauty comes from you.

The radiance of your brow I cannot match,

unless the sun's disk lies within my breast.

When the gentle wind furrows my surface,

my lord is thoughtfully arranging some affair.

And the twilight whose color, after sunset,

shades my horizon is nothing but your red banners.

And when pitch-dark night lets fall its cloak

over me, and terror spreads from my appearance,

I mirror a Mudarite outburst of wrath

sometimes seen in you, and I glare askance.

By your honor, an expanse of mine has grown broad,

seeking to match your breadth of heart.

Within me are life for humankind and its opposite,

as with you, my lord, in judgment and command.

And all those you see gathered around me—

they are servants who readily carry out your command.

Even the greatest of the people is the least of servants

before you, and he counts this his highest pride.

And before my lord stands one

whose wish is your favor, sincere in secret and openly.

    كَساهُ سُروراً حُلَّةِ الحَمدِ والشُّكرِ

    His sincerity appears to you embodied;

it has clothed him, in joy, in a robe of praise and thanks.

    وإن رُمتَ تصَديقي أِطلَّ على قعري

    Your image truly dwells within my heart;

if you wish to confirm my words, look down into my depths.

What recourse have I if my soul lies barren without it

and it leaves me burning in the blaze of separation?

For its sake I shall pour my tears upon my breast,

yet pouring tears upon my breast will not suffice.

Would that I knew—and wishes seldom come true—

whether my water can quench the embers in my heart!

Do not think, O my listeners, that I

shall mirror him in all his radiant virtues.

How far apart, in benefit, are my outpouring and his!

Is an ebb without a flood like a flood without an ebb?

How far apart are a sea whose flow is halted in the earth

and a sea whose benefits course across the face of the earth!

How far apart are a sea of clashing waters

and a sea of piety, generosity, knowledge, and kindness!

How far apart are one dwelling in a desert waste

and one trailing the hem of glory in green robes!

    وليس أخو قُلٍّ يُوزي أخا كُثِر

    Therefore, some of his qualities suffice for me;

one with little cannot equal one with much.

I have seen the kings of the earth, east and west,

and firsthand sight has shown me what is best.

They are like the fasting month in honor, yet

Muhammad among them is the Night of Decree.

I have never seen one so loved and feared as he,

his face aglow with majesty and gladness.

The dew of his brow revives those who meet him,

as flowers are revived by wholesome rain.

He has taken piety and obedience to his Lord as provisions,

and reverence for God is life's finest provision.

How wondrous a soul, whose gentleness rivals in fragrance

a breeze drifting by night over the garden roses!

Sound in judgment, when the night of calamity grows dark,

you see the face of his counsel unveil a full moon.

He soars in ambition, radiant with gracious qualities,

as a towering hill smiles, revealing flowers.

A scion of kings descended from dauntless kings,

through whom the eye of glory, rank, and renown is gladdened.

Far be it that poetry could exhaust his virtues,

even if I exhausted all my verse in praising him.

And take this from a poet sincerely devoted to you,

a man of ease in poetry, never one who finds it hard.

Yes, he has no difficulty, though he is poor,

and has no riches, though he possesses ease.

When the pens sway their flanks upon the page,

his palm takes the place of white swords and tawny spears.

It has come to you in haste, so great is its longing,

but with a cheek reddened by his shyness.

If, by your grace, it meets with your acceptance,

then well and good; otherwise, the generous know how to excuse.
