عجِبتُ لبعضِ بني آدمٍ

عجِبتُ لبعضِ بني آدمٍ

وبي عند ذِكرِهِمُ خَجلُ

وبي عند ذِكرِهِمُ خَجلُ

I marvel at some of Adam’s children,

I have marveled at some of Adam’s sons,

and shame comes over me when they are mentioned.

and I feel shame at the mention of them.

على اللهِ يَقوَى تَجَاسُرهُ

على اللهِ يَقوَى تَجَاسُرهُ

ومِن غيرِه خائِفٌ وَجِلُ

ومِن غيرِه خائِفٌ وَجِلُ

Against God, their audacity grows strong,

His insolence toward God grows stronger,

yet they fear anyone other than Him, trembling.

yet he fears anyone but Him, filled with dread.

تَدَجَّوا نُفوساً فَأتقَاهُمُ

تَدَجَّوا نُفوساً فَأتقَاهُمُ

يُثابُ عَلى لَعنِه الرَّجُلُ

يُثابُ عَلى لَعنِه الرَّجُلُ

Their souls have grown so dark that even the most God-fearing among them

They grew dark in soul; even the most God-fearing among them—

is someone a man is rewarded for cursing.

a man is rewarded for cursing him.
