يقولونَ المَعَرِّي مُلحِدٌ بَل

يقولونَ المَعَرِّي مُلحِدٌ بَل

منَ الإلحادِ قَد أبدَوا فُنونا

منَ الإلحادِ قَد أبدَوا فُنونا

They say al-Maʿarrī is an atheist; yet

they have displayed many forms of atheism.

فقلت مقالُكم ذا عن يَقينٍ

فقلت مقالُكم ذا عن يَقينٍ

وجزمٍ أم تَظُنُّونَ الظُّنونا

وجزمٍ أم تَظُنُّونَ الظُّنونا

So I said: Is this statement of yours based on certainty

and conviction, or do you merely conjecture?

فَقالوا بل عَنِ إيمانٍ وجَزمٍ

فَقالوا بل عَنِ إيمانٍ وجَزمٍ

ونحنُ لما نَقولُه موقِنونا

ونحنُ لما نَقولُه موقِنونا

They said: Rather, on faith and conviction,

and we are certain of what we say.

ألا لِلَّهِ دَرُّ أبِيكمُ إذ

ألا لِلَّهِ دَرُّ أبِيكمُ إذ

بإلحادٍ غَدَوتم تُؤمِنونا

بإلحادٍ غَدَوتم تُؤمِنونا

Ah, God bless your father, for

you have come to believe in atheism!
