جبالُmountains هُمومٍof cares علىupon كاهِليmy shoulders
وجيشُand an army الشَّدائِدof hardships منfrom داخِليwithin me
Mountains of care weigh upon my shoulders,
Mountains of cares upon my shoulders,
and an army of adversities rises from within me.
And an army of hardships from within me.
توالتcame in succession علىَّupon me عَلىin غِرَّةٍunawareness
وماand not كنتُI was للِهَمِّof sorrow بالحامِلِa bearer
They came upon me one after another, catching me unawares,
They came upon me one after another, unawares,
though I had never been a bearer of sorrow.
And I was not one to bear sorrow.
فَضاقَتso grew narrow عَلىَّfor me رِحابُwide expanses الفَضاof space
وفيand in العَيشِlife ماnot صِرتُI became بالآملِhopeful
Then the vast reaches of space closed in around me,
So the wide expanses of space closed in on me,
and I no longer held any hope in life.
And in life I was no longer hopeful.
ولوand if كانwere يُجديto help البُكاءُweeping فَتىًa young man
لأجدىit would surely have helped أخًَاa brother of المَدمَعِtears الهاطِلِstreaming
Had weeping been able to avail a young man,
And if weeping could help a young man,
it would have availed the man of streaming tears.
It would surely have helped a brother of streaming tears.
فقلتُso I said ألوذُI seek refuge بهاin it عَلَّهاperhaps it
تُخَفِّفُeases بعضَsome of الأسىthe grief القاتِلِdeadly
So I said, “I will seek refuge in it; perhaps it will
So I said, “I shall seek refuge in it; perhaps it
ease some of this deathly grief.”
Will ease some of the deadly grief.”
فلذتُso I sought refuge بِهاin it مثلlike ذوبِthe melt of النضارِpure gold
تُزَحزِحُdislodges لُبَّthe reason of الفَتىthe young man العاقِلِsensible
So I sought refuge in it, like molten gold,
So I sought refuge in it, which was like molten gold;
that dislodges the reason of a sensible young man.
It dislodges the reason of the sensible young man.
فجاءتso it came بعكسِwith the opposite of المُنىhopes بلindeed وزادتand added
هُموماًcares علىon top of هَمِىَmy sorrow النازِلِbefalling
But it brought the very opposite of my hopes; indeed, it increased
Yet it brought the opposite of my hopes; indeed, it added
my cares atop the grief already descended upon me.
Cares to the sorrow that had befallen me.
وغطَّتand it veiled علىover بَصريmy sight وقَضَتand put an end
قضاءًutterly علىto عَقلىَmy reason الرَّاحلِdeparting
It veiled my sight and pronounced
And it veiled my sight and destroyed
a final sentence upon my fading reason.
My departing reason utterly.
