They said, “Parting is tomorrow.” Can I be spared

my long lament over it by my long yearning?

Will my eye be deprived of his beauty tomorrow,

then spend the night drenched in the water of my eyelids?

How many tomorrows like tomorrow shall I spend in sorrow,

and taste therein the torment of humiliation!

What recourse have I, when my heart cannot find

patience apart from him, and passion scorches me?

    أسَفي تَطِيبُ لَهُ الحَيَاةُ بِدُونِي

    For me, life holds no sweetness without him;

alas, life is sweet to him without me!

    وَجَمالُ وَجهِكَ كَيف لاَ يُضنِينِي

    Ah, Abu Zayd, you have indeed worn me down;

and how could the beauty of your face not wear me down?

If you knew what my inmost heart conceals

of true, hidden devotion to you,

you would not shun me or be content to part from me,

nor strike me in the heart with the arrow of your absence.

Who will bring him to me, sweet and measured in speech,

    his words like well-guarded pearls?

O figure, swaying proudly in al-Bayda among

    maidens like wide-eyed gazelles,

will you bend toward me when the east wind passes?

Do not forget it: such is the habit of boughs.

And rejoice in a festival whose splendor you have put to shame,

and whose radiant brow you have veiled with your forehead’s light.
