كَوَجنتَِهِlike his cheek حمراءَred طَيِّبَةَsweet النَّشرِthe fragrance
Ibn Sawda gave a red carnation—
Ibn Suda gave a red carnation,
red as his cheek, and sweetly fragrant;
Red like his cheek, sweetly fragrant.
ومبسِمُهand his smiling mouth الدِّرّيpearly تَأرَّجَwafted forth عِطرُهُits perfume
ولمand never ترَyou see منany دُرٍّpearls تَنَفسَّbreathed عَنout عِطِرperfume
and his pearly smiling mouth—its perfume wafted.
And the perfume of his pearly smiling mouth wafted forth;
Never have you seen a pearl breathe forth perfume.
And you have never seen pearls breathe out perfume.
فَهاجَso stirred بهَاby it مَاwhat كانَwas فيin القَلبِthe heart كَامِناًlying hidden
وأضرمَand kindled فيin الأحشاءِthe innermost depths مُتَّقَدthe blaze الجَمرِof the embers
At it, what had lain hidden in the heart surged up,
So what lay hidden in the heart was stirred by it,
and kindled within the vitals the glow of embers.
And kindled the embers' blaze in the innermost depths.
