I listened to no complaint from a complainant;
this is the truth, not a storyteller's tale.

We used to boast that we were poets, out of
excessive vanity and scant understanding.

And we trailed imagination's hem in conceit, reckoning
ourselves on a level with the celestial spheres.

the laughter of flowers beside a weeping brook.

that joined the myrtle's softness to the fragrance of arak.

لِعقِيدةِ الحُكَمَاءِ والنُّسَّاك
The master then quoted a verse summing up
the creed of sages and ascetics:

You heeded a summons from the caller of idle curiosity,
who spread idle curiosity like nets for its devotees.

with a seizure, and remained motionless.

Beauty has clothed him in the robe of your adornments.
