وهلand (question marker) فوقَupon وجهِthe face of الأرضِthe earth مِنany أحمَقٍfool مِثليlike me
By your Lord, have you seen anything more foolish than my mind?
By your Lord, have you seen a mind more foolish than mine?
And is there a fool like me upon the face of the earth?
Is there on the face of the earth a more stupid fool than me?
وكمand how often أدَّعيI claim عِلماknowledge وحُسنَand good ثقافَةٍeducation
وماand no جاهلٌignorant person إلاexcept ومِنand from فوقِهabove him جَهليmy ignorance
And how often I claim knowledge and a fine education,
How much knowledge and good culture do I claim to have,
Yet no ignorant man exists but my ignorance surpasses his.
Yet every ignorant person is above my ignorance!
وأرميand I throw بنَفسيmyself فيinto صفُوفِthe ranks of أراذِلٍbase people
ولستُand I am not لهمto them شكلاًa match وليسواand they are not علىof شكلِيmy kind
And I throw myself into the ranks of the ignoble,
I mix with the lowest of the low,
Though I am not their like, nor are they like me.
Yet I am not of their kind, nor are they of my kind.
وقضَّيتُand I have spent عُمريmy life هَكذاlike this فيin تَناقُضٍcontradiction
فَفيfor in الهزلِjest ذوpossessing جدٍّseriousness وفيand in الجِدِّseriousness ذوpossessing هَزلjest
And I have spent my life thus, in contradiction:
I spent my life this way, full of contradictions,
For in jest I am serious, and in seriousness I jest.
Joking when serious, serious when joking.
وكمand how many مرَّpassed يومٌa day كِدتَyou nearly تُبصِرنيsee me بهon it

وجِسميand my body بلاwithout ثوبٍa garment ورجِليand my foot بلاwithout نَعلa sandal
And how many a day has passed when you nearly saw me,
How many days have passed when you almost saw me
My body without a garment, my foot without a sandal.
With no clothes on my body or shoes on my feet.
وبينَاand while يَزيدُincreases الأمرُthe plight بيfor me فيin اشتِدَادِهits severity
وعندَand at اشتِدادِthe intensifying of الأمرِthe plight لَمdid not تَلقَyou find مِنany خِلfriend
And while my plight grows ever more severe,
And as my situation grew more dire,
And when hardship grew severe, you found no friend,
When matters became most difficult, you heard no complaint from me.

وقدand already لاَحhas shone فجرُthe dawn of السَّعدِgood fortune فيin غَسَقِthe deep darkness of الهولِterror
Suddenly I see hope's mouth smiling,
Then I saw the mouth of death smiling,
And the dawn of good fortune has shone in terror's deep darkness.
As the dawn of good fortune shone in the gloom of terror.
فأنسَىso I forget الذيthat which قدalready مرَّpassed بيupon me مِنof خصَاصةٍpoverty
وأبذُلُand I give فيin زَهوٍpride وأُسرِفُand I am extravagant فيin البَذلgiving
So I forget the poverty I have endured,
So I forgot all the baseness that I had gone through,
And I give in pride, extravagant in my giving.
And I spent lavishly and was excessive in spending.
ورُبَّتَماand sometimes أفنيتُI exhausted ذاكthat ولمand did not تَزَلcease

And sometimes I have spent it all, yet still
And I may have wasted it all, while still
My clothes are as they were, and my sandals are on my feet.
Wearing the same clothes and shoes as I was before.

Are these traits anything but folly,
Surely this behavior shows nothing but foolishness,
As a sound mind free from madness confirms?
Supported by a mind free of madness.
نعمyes أناI ذوpossessing فضلmerit فغطتهso it concealed it سيرتيmy conduct
فمَاso not أناI ذوpossessing فَضلٍmerit وإنand even though كنتُI am ذَاpossessing فضلِmerit
Yes, I have merit, yet my conduct has concealed it;
Yes, I have merit, but my conduct covers it up.
So I have no merit, even though I have merit.
I have merit, even if I am a person of merit.
وإنand if مرَّpasses وجهٌa face مُشرقٌradiant ورَأيتُهand I see it

And if a radiant face passes by and I see it,
And if a radiant face passes by and I see it,
My mind takes flight with longing at the sight of it.
My mind flies in longing when I see it.
ويذهبُand goes طرفيmy gaze فيin تعقُّبpursuit of خَطوِهits footsteps
وإنand if كنتُI am فيin شُغلٍwork فياthen oh ضَيعةَthe waste of الشُّغلِthe work
And my gaze goes in pursuit of its footsteps,
And my eyes follow its footsteps,
And if I am at work, alas for the work gone to waste!
Even if I am busy - what a loss of being busy!
وترتَاحُand rests easy نفسِيmy soul إنif أكُنI am قدalready عرَفتُهI have known it

وإلاَّand otherwise فإِنيthen indeed I فيin التِفَاتٍturning to look وفيand in سُؤلٍquestioning
And my soul rests easy if I already know that face;
My soul rests if I happen to recognize it,
Otherwise, I keep turning to look and asking questions.
Otherwise I look around and keep asking.
وأغضَبُand I rage حتىuntil أَستحيلَI become جَهنَّماhell
وأحلُمُand I show forbearance حتىuntil أبدِلَI exchange العِزَّhonor بالذُّلfor humiliation
And I rage until I become hell,
I get so angry I turn into hell itself,
And I show forbearance until I trade honor for humiliation.
And I dream until hardship turns into honor.
قضَىdecreed اللهGod أنthat أبقَىI remain فريداalone بِلاwithout أبٍa father
حَنونٍloving ولاnor أُمٍّa mother شفُوقٍcompassionate ولاnor أهلِkin
God decreed that I remain alone, with no father
God has decreed that I remain unique, without
To love me, no compassionate mother, and no kin.
A loving father, a compassionate mother, or family.
غَريباًa stranger وإنand even though فيin مسقِطِthe falling-place of الرَّأسِthe head مَسكَنِيmy dwelling

وَحدياalone وإنand even though كانتthey are أخِلاَّىَmy friends كالنَملlike ants
A stranger, though my home is in my birthplace,
A stranger, even though my dwelling is my hometown,
Alone, though my friends are as numerous as ants.
Alone, even though my peers are as many as ants.
وعَربدَتيand my rowdiness فيin الشُّربِdrinking تُرغمُcompels مُبصِريwhoever sees me
لِيخلِدَto preserve forever فيin عَينيهِhis two eyes ليfor me نظرةَa look of الذُّلhumiliation
And my rowdiness while drinking compels whoever sees me
And my drunkenness forces my observers
To fix forever in his eyes a look of contempt for me.
To give me a look of disgrace and humiliation.
وأغدُوand I set out إلىto فِعلِcommitting المعَاصِيsins مُهَروِلاًhurrying
وإنand if أقصِدِI seek الطاعَاتِacts of obedience فالقَيدُthen the shackle فيon رِجلِيmy foot
And I hurry off to commit sins,
And I rush to commit sins,
But if I seek acts of obedience, a shackle is on my foot.
While if I intend good deeds, there are shackles on my feet.
فلاso no عِيشَةٌlife تُرضَىis acceptable ولاnor كَسبُearning طاعَةٍobedience
فلاso may ... not أكثرَmultiply الرحمانُthe All-Merciful فيamong خَلِقهHis creatures مِثليmy like
So I have neither a satisfying life nor obedience to my credit;
So there is no satisfactory life or honorable earning -
So may the All-Merciful not multiply my like among His creatures.
Did the Merciful create anyone like me among His creatures?
