ولاَand do not تُوجِعُونِيhurt me بالمَلامِwith blame وبالعُتبَىand with reproach
By your claim upon my heart, be mindful of the Lord,
By your rights in my conscience, monitor intoxication
and do not hurt me with blame and reproach.
And do not hurt me with blame and reproach
فماfor neither سَاكناتُthe dwellers الدَّوحِthe spreading trees يُشجِىsaddens نَحِيبُهاtheir sobbing

For neither the dwellers of the spreading trees, whose sobbing stirs sorrow,
For the dwellers of the dunes, their weeping does not console
and whose eyes refuse to aid them by shedding tears,
And their tragedies refuse to help them overflowing

nor the memories of the lovesick man whose heart is anguished,
Nor do the memories of passion comfort his heart
which unmake him in separation and revive him in nearness,
To annihilate him from afar and bring him near

With eyes tearful since he left with sadness

Appealing to one who fights for it but did not fight

More troubled inwardly, hurt at heart
or more anguished at heart than I among those named.
Than I among those mentioned, pained within

لِحَربٍfor war إذاwhen ماemphatic particle شِبتُI grow gray منfrom هَولهاits terror شَبَّاit grows young
For my conscience never ceases declaring
For my conscience does not cease to reveal
war: when I grow gray from its terror, it grows young.
A war which when I enter its intensity flares up
وسَلَّطتُand I unleashed منfrom جيشِthe army المدامةِof wine جحفلاًa legion
عَليهagainst it وفيهand within it راحٌwine ينهبنيplunders me نَهباa plundering
And I unleashed a legion from the army of wine
And I unleash from the army of the wine a troop
against it, and within that host is wine that plunders me utterly.
Upon it and in it which plunders me plundering
يُبَكِّتُنِيit reproaches me ماليwhat is wrong with me? هجَمتُI attacked علىagainst أخa brother
ولمand why? ذاتُthe inner self صدرِيof my breast إذwhen غزتنِيinvaded me الطِّلاَthe wine تُسبَىis taken captive
It reproaches me: Why did I attack a brother?
It makes me weep when I attack a brother
And why was my inmost heart taken captive when wine invaded me?
And why does my chest when raided by spurs get blamed
أغيَّرتُdid I alter? منof رُوحٍa spirit يُفاوِحُrivals in fragrance لطفُهاits gentleness
أريجَthe fragrance نسيمِof the breeze اليَاسمِينof jasmine إذاwhen هَبَّاit blows
Did I alter a spirit whose gentleness vies in fragrance with
I changed from a spirit whose gentleness
the jasmine breeze's perfume when it blows?
Spreads the fragrance of jasmine when it blows
وبُحتُand I divulged بِسِرٍّa secret طالماfor a long time قدhad كَتمتُهُI concealed it
ولكنَّbut قلبيmy heart الآنnow فاضoverflowed بهwith it حُباwith love
And I divulged a secret I had long concealed,
And I confessed a secret I had long concealed
but now my heart, full of love, overflowed with it.
But now my heart overflowed with love for it
فأعرَبتُso I expressed عنهabout it تحتunder تأثيرِthe influence قوَّةٍof a force
أبتrefused بعدَafter ملكِtaking possession of النُّطقِspeech أنto تتركَleave القلبَاthe heart
So I voiced it under the influence of a force
So I expressed it under the influence of a power
that, after taking hold of speech, refused to leave the heart alone.
That after ruling speech refused to leave the heart
فقلتُso I said لَهُto it مهلاًeasy! ضَمِيريmy conscience فإنَّfor indeed ليI have

So I said to it: Easy, my conscience, for I have
So I said wait my conscience for I
an excuse that, if you knew it, would make you abandon reproach.
Have excuses that if you know you'll quit blaming
نعَمyes إننيindeed I أذنبتُI sinned ذَنباa sin كمَاas تَرىyou see
وماand not الذَّنبُthe fault ذنبِيmy fault إنماrather, only الذَّنبُthe fault للصَّهبَاbelongs to the tawny wine
Yes, I committed a sin, as you see,
Yes I have sinned a sin as you see
but the fault is not mine; the fault lies solely with the tawny wine.
But my sin is not my sin, it is the sin of intoxication
فقالَthen it said مُجِيباin reply قدindeed ضَللتَyou have strayed عنfrom الهُدَىright guidance
هلِquestion particle المرءُa person إلاanything but فعلُهhis conduct أيهاO you الأغبَىmost foolish one
It replied: You have strayed from right guidance.
It replied, you have strayed from the right path
Is a man anything but his deeds, you utter fool?
Is man anything but his deeds, o most ignorant
إذاif كانis رَشفُsipping الكأسِthe cup يُفضِيleads لسَقطةٍto a fall

فتبًّاthen damnation لرَشفِupon sipping الكاسthe cup تبَّاdamnation لهُupon it تباdamnation
If sipping from the cup leads to a fall,
If the drinking of the cup leads to a downfall
then damn sipping from the cup—damn it, damn it!
Curse the drinking of the cup, curse it, curse it
فقلتُso I said لهto it إنِّيindeed I سأذهبُI shall go طالِباseeking
لِعفوِهfor his pardon عنِّيof me ماwhat تقولُwill you say إذاif لَبَّىhe responds
So I said to it: I shall go, seeking
I said I will go seeking
his forgiveness of me; what will you say if he answers my plea?
Forgiveness for me, what do you say if it relents
فقالَthen it said إذاif ماemphatic particle جئتَهُyou come to him متذَلِّلاًhumbly

وأولاكَand he grants you عفواpardon إننِيindeed I أغفِرُshall forgive الذَّنباthe sin
It said: If you come to him humbly
It said, if you come to it humbled
and he grants you pardon, I shall forgive the sin.
And ask forgiveness, I will forgive the sin
أمولايO my lord رِفقاgentleness بيwith me وأنقِذand save حُشَاشَتِيmy remaining life
فإنَّfor indeed ضَميريmy conscience لاnot أطِيقُI can endure لهagainst it حَرباa war
O my lord, be gentle with me and save what life remains in me,
My Lord, be gentle with me and save my recklessness
for I cannot endure a war against my conscience.
For my conscience cannot bear war
جَنتdid wrong نَزواتُthe impulses النفسِof the soul نحوَكtoward you سيِّيmy peer
فَعنso for نَزواتِthe impulses النَّفسof the soul لاdo not تَلُمِblame الصَّبَّاthe lovesick one
My soul's wayward impulses wronged you, my peer;
The whims of the self have deviated toward You my Master
so do not blame the lovesick one for the soul's impulses.
So do not blame the madness for the whims of the self
فماthen how أعظَمَgreat البُشرَىthe glad tidings إذاif ماemphatic particle رحِمتَنِيyou show me mercy
وإنand if أنتَyou لمdo not ترحَمshow mercy فماthen how أسوَأَdreadful العُبَىthe outcome (uncertain reading)
Then how great the glad tidings if you show me mercy!
How great is the good news if You have mercy on me
And if you show no mercy, how dreadful the outcome (uncertain reading)!
And if You do not have mercy, how terrible is misery
