The enemy of truth, to one and all,

is a bore unmatched by any other bore.

And he is one whom all eyes, when they see him,

shower with loathing in a pouring torrent.

He mingled with lions here, though

his hometown's dogs used to piss on him.

    إذا أمَّ الوَلائمَ يستطِيلُ

    He has two camel legs, stumbling about;

when he heads for banquets, he stretches himself tall.

And his eyes are like those of a cat in ashes

that saw a dog and was seized with panic.

For they have said: 'The enemy of truth, the dog of the

banquets, is an outsider among us.'

By my life, everything they said is true,

and your praise of the Jews is proof to us.

And for the nobles and scholars among us,

the dog of banquets, we see, has no liking.

Upon his forefathers, outsiders among us,

falls a torrential downpour of curses.

To you, O sons of al-Hamra, my counsel:

for my counsel guarantees you right guidance.

If the dog of banquets should one day come

to you seeking food, then say:

'O dog of banquets, there is no way

to let the likes of you in—no way!'

For, he says, you let him in only

for fear of his tongue, which rails at you at length.

You have indeed clothed us in a garment of shame,

and we were told: 'Your honored man is lowly.'

So an impudent man is better than your modest one,

and a miser is nobler than your generous one.

For the miser has brought no blame upon us,

and it was said that minds among us have grown foolish.

Will you accept insults against us from an outsider?

Then may neither we nor the outsider live!

    He gulps down your food,

and we know he is a ravenous beast.

And his gaze roams over every fault,

while his mind does not dwell on merits.

Then he leaves for someone else, to tell tales,

and lies when he finds nothing to say.

And we know all that; yet when he comes,

he is admitted to our home once more.

By my life, we are more deserving of rebuke,

and this shame will not leave us.

The swine came to our town abased,

and there the lowly man attained his desire.

And he found a woman bereaved of her husband,

whose orphaned children had an inheritance coming to them.

So the accursed man deceived her, never relenting,

    until he became her husband.

And he lived off the inheritance of young orphans,

    orphans whose sustenance was meager.

And he showed her no consideration in spending; but

the enemy of religion is incapable of kindness.

    God's decree befell her—so what

can be said when the decree descends?

And if you wish for torment beyond this,

I shall add it for you, and God is the guarantor.

An ignoramus teaches in our schools:

he speaks, yet does not understand what he says.
