Shall I dispute his learning—shall I dispute it—

when Imam al-Bukhari bears witness for him?

Are you not there before him as he dictates,

while he is like a sea foaming with brilliant stars?

A veil of awe lies over him,

and his face is radiant with light.

The Imam's book is like a sky,

and the transmitters of hadith are like moons.

And our Abu Zayd ranges, with his research,

through it, like a champion on the racecourse.

How could he not rise high, being the son of Shuayb,

that authority in learning, its surging sea,

the hadith master of the two Wests and the two Easts,

and the people's guide, subduer of disputants?

Thus the son came as a copy of his father,

    and lights spring from lights.

And my proof for my claim, which admits

    no path to denial,

is Pasha al-Tihami's choice of him,

he being who he is: al-Tihami al-Mazwari.

Attention from a great man is a great thing,

and a great man's choice is the best of choices.

God knows that this deed of yours,

O brother of glory and ever-flowing bounty,

is pure prudence, wisdom, and sound judgment,

    and rightness, eminence, and glory.

What deed of yours has not been

a miracle, daughter of your mighty mind?

Salute in him his devotion to you—a devotion

whose description has risen beyond poetry.

Salute in him speech that is lawful magic,

like a fragrant breath that comes from flowers.

    حيِّ فيه يَراعهُ في نِثارِ

    Salute in him his pen in verse;

salute in him his pen in prose.

Salute in him his genius: he has surpassed,

    while still young, great masters.

Salute in him the delicacy of his spirit, till

he almost vanishes from sight through sheer subtlety.

May you remain a pride to our age, which rises

through you above all other ages.

May you remain worthy of every noble deed,

lasting in remembrance, lasting in its effects.

O our cherished Abu Zayd—and who is like

Abu Zayd, the delight of minds?

Take it: it is the essence of an emotion from

me, untainted by the hand of others.

Take it: in it I exalt your worth,

for you indeed deserve such esteem.

From a brother devoted to you, as you

have known him through years of consequence.

And in the praise you have known from me,

I remain constant, at evening and at dawn.

And I am the man I have known of old:

keen-edged, the firestick of my resolve alight.

In wealth of soul I have ever taken pride,

and wealth of soul is the mark of the free.

I care nothing for ease or hardship; man

    lives between affluence and want.

Indeed, a man of letters' poverty is no poverty,

and a man of letters' wealth is no wealth.

And if I am afflicted in my absence

by the barking of a band of fools,

I care nothing for them—how could I care,

when they are beneath my cleaving sword?

Their napes are slapped by my right hand,

and their beards plucked by my left.

And I ward them off through my nearness

to the sanctuary of the valiant lord of glory.

For Pasha al-Tihami's protection is my refuge,

and the Pasha's protection is the mightiest protection.

And the true man of letters cares nothing,

when faced with honor, for silver or pure gold.
