درستُ الفقهَ علماً والأُصولا

درستُ الفقهَ علماً والأُصولا

وعلمَ بلاغةٍ دَرساً جَميلا

وعلمَ بلاغةٍ دَرساً جَميلا

I studied jurisprudence as a science, and its principles,

And made a fine study of the science of rhetoric.

وبعدَ المنطقِ التوحيدُ صِرفٌ

وبعدَ المنطقِ التوحيدُ صِرفٌ

ونحوٌ لم أكُن منه مَلولا

ونحوٌ لم أكُن منه مَلولا

And after logic came theology and morphology,

And grammar, of which I never grew weary.

حسابٌ سِيرَةٌ أدَبٌ وعِلمُ ال

حسابٌ سِيرَةٌ أدَبٌ وعِلمُ ال

فرائِضِ لا أُرَى في ذا كَسولا

فرائِضِ لا أُرَى في ذا كَسولا

Arithmetic, biography, literature, and the science of

Inheritance shares—in this I am not considered lazy.

وللتَّاريخِ والتَّوقيتش وقُتٌ

وللتَّاريخِ والتَّوقيتش وقُتٌ

وهندسةٌ قرأتُ بها قَليلا

وهندسةٌ قرأتُ بها قَليلا

And for history and timekeeping there was time,

And geometry, in which I did a little reading.

كذاك مبادىءُ التَّفسيرِ بعدَ ال

كذاك مبادىءُ التَّفسيرِ بعدَ ال

حَديثِ لغيرها كانت مَثيلا

حَديثِ لغيرها كانت مَثيلا

Likewise, the rudiments of exegesis, after the

Hadith, were on a par with the other subjects.

فبعضٌ لم أزَل فيه مُجِداًّ

فبعضٌ لم أزَل فيه مُجِداًّ

وجُلٌّ قد شَفيتُ به الغَليلا

وجُلٌّ قد شَفيتُ به الغَليلا

In some I have never ceased working diligently,

And in most I have quenched my burning thirst.

وهذي لي الشَّهادةُ مِن شًيوخٍ

وهذي لي الشَّهادةُ مِن شًيوخٍ

على قَولي وصِحََّتِه دَليلا

على قَولي وصِحََّتِه دَليلا

And this certificate I have from my teachers

Is proof of my statement and its truth.

وكم قد أرهَقوني في امتحانٍ

وكم قد أرهَقوني في امتحانٍ

وما وجَدوا لإخفاقي سَبيلا

وما وجَدوا لإخفاقي سَبيلا

And how often they put me through grueling examinations,

Yet they found no way to make me fail.
