    By the sacred bond between us, O companions,

    Leave me with what the heart has strength to bear.

    For I am stricken by a calamity that grieves me,

    And living in this age is itself the calamity.

    تُخفِّفُ أحزَاني دموعٌ لها سَكبُ

    So do not reproach me for tears I have shed;

    Tears poured forth lighten my sorrows.

    And the sons of this age, save a very few,

    Are peace outwardly and war within.

    What have I to do with people whose hatred afflicts me,

    When no war has broken out between me and them?

    I have seen them behave insolently toward me,

    Though they are not my equals, and no flock has gathered us.

    I have no need I seek from them,

    Nor have they any need of me that I know of.

    What hurts them in me is what they know:

    My tongue, when I unsheathe it, is a keen-edged sword.

    Ah, let hatred's blaze boil in their hearts,

    For hatred's blaze in the heart does not die down.

    Their eyes are downcast before me; but if I am absent,

    A head among them rises, and abuse bursts forth.

    And their race toward me makes me laugh,

    For one knave to tell me what another knave has said.

    Such are the masters of disgrace: when they

    Make their shameful deeds known, terror seizes them.

    Does not the dog with the broken fang provoke laughter

    When that dog bares its fangs?

    وبُغضُهمُ واللهِ عندِي هُوَ الحبُّ

    What I hate most is their courting my affection;

    And hatred of them, by God, is love to me.

    فقُربُهمُ بُعدٌ وبُعدُهمُ قُربُ

    So at the sight of them I lose all my peace;

    For their nearness is distance, and their distance nearness.

    What has hurt them—may God disgrace them—is that

    My tongue is swift, and their honor is wide open.

    I know them: as for loyalty, for them

    It is hard; but treachery is their habit.

    ورُؤيتُهم شُؤمٌ وذِكرهُم كَربُ

    Their speech is filth, and their company harm;

    And seeing them is ill fortune, and mentioning them distress.

    Vile in character, their souls are base—

    Traits they have grown up with since their weaning.

    Their traits tell you that their origins

    Have ancestries disowned by non-Arabs and Arabs alike.

    Their sight is contagious; your only recourse with them is

    Flight—for among mankind they are mangy camels.

    وإن سَكتُوا فالمقتُ عنهُمُ يَنصَبُّ

    They weigh upon souls if they speak;

    And if they fall silent, loathing pours from them.

    وخُبثُ النفُوسِ الداءُ ليسَ له طِبُّ

    Indeed, wicked souls among them have grown foul;

    And corruption of souls is a disease for which no cure exists.

    فنُورُ الهُدَى لو حلَّ باطِنُهم يَخبُو

    Their inner selves have indeed darkened with sin;

    So guidance's light would fade, were it to enter their inner selves.

    And beware of mentioning their honor, for it

    Indeed exceeds the stench of dogs' carcasses.

    And satire's fire devours their dried-up honor

    Like firewood; the honor of the vile is firewood.

    I satirized them—no, rather, by satirizing them I satirized

    My verse—for a dog is not struck with a sword.

    وإن قلتُ هجواً ردَّدَ الشرقُ والغربُ

    Were I to speak praise of them, it would die that instant;

    But if I speak satire, East and West repeat it.

    Have they not considered their standing among mankind?

    Alas for their heart—if only they had a heart!

    I swagger and glory among mankind, trailing

    The hems of glory, a keen-edged sword in my hand.

    With my feet I trample the foreheads of their mighty,

    And if he seeks to raise his head, destruction and ruin await.

    ولِي من فِعالي المالُ والجاهُ والصَّحبُ

    I raise my head among mankind, my nose held high;

    And my deeds have brought me wealth, rank, and companions.

    وتَعرفُنِي الآدابُ والعلمُ والكُتبُ

    Good character, excellence, and reason know me;

    And letters, learning, and books know me.

    And, besides baseness, their vileness knows them,

    And treachery, deceit, betrayal, and plunder.

    When have the ascents and heights ever been barred to me?

    And are there veils between a man of glory and the heights?

    Among the people of verse I am not like a band

    Who defend when rewarded, and revile when denied.

    And if in poetry I find delight for my mind,

    Then its watering place is sweet to me, and its abode fertile.

    My verse is inspired in me by my poetic gift,

    So I sing it as a song by which the mind is charmed.

    Its meanings have lifted their veil for me,

    And from it the difficult comes docilely to me, made easy.

    I wander among its blossoms, breathing their scent,

    And drink from its clear stream, sweet to me.

    Its meanings kneel before me in submission,

    And an unassailable rhyme whose flight availed it nothing.

    Nor have I ever made a trade of the praise in my odes,

    When a praise-maker comes with a bowl in his hand.

    Rather, my praise among mankind is reserved

    For one peerless man, with whose bounty the clouds pour.

    He knows me despite the foes and their talk,

    And I know him: a noble man knows a noble man.

    You will not see me describing anything but wine,

    When I am at a gathering and drinking pleases me.

    أيطفُو بسَطحِ الماءِ لُؤلُؤهُ الرَّطبُ

    The cupbearer mixes it, and its bubbles rise;

    Does its moist pearl float on the water's surface?

    إذا ما ارتَخت في خدِّها تِلكمُ الهُدبُ

    Or languorous eyes and the lashes of their lids,

    When those lashes droop upon her cheek;

    Or the swaying bān tree, whose embrace I am denied,

    Though a robe, alas, enfolds her slender figure.

    ولِي قَد تَصافَى منهُمُ الوُّدُّ والحُبُّ

    I have the best of friends, who love my companionship;

    And their affection and love for me have become pure.

    فَمِنِي لهم قَلبٌ ولي منهُمُ قلبُ

    They love me with a love I return to them;

    From me they have a heart, and from them I have a heart.

    I die from separation from them, and revive whenever

    They waft like a breeze of remembrance across my mind.

    Valiant chieftains, present wherever there is generosity,

    I seek refuge with them in distress when distress overwhelms.

    Men of insight and discernment, their speech is gentle,

    Like the breaths of garden blossoms greeted by early rain.

    فأذكرُهُم والطِّيبُ يعشَقُهُ القَلبُ

    The scent of musk wafts when their name is mentioned;

    So I mention them, and the heart adores fragrance.

    They suffice me among mankind; and indeed, all others

    Are firewood beneath my feet, their crests subdued.

    How fortunate is one whose mention is sweet among people!

    And woe to him whom the caravan reviles on its way!

    A man is nothing but his renown for virtue,

    And his renown is nothing but his deeds and achievements.

    So persevere in earning good repute among mankind,

    So that history, the people, and the Lord may thank you.
