At your arrival, al-Hamra has become fragrant with perfume,
With your auspicious arrival, redolent with fragrance
and has strutted proudly and attained every lofty rank.
The land is suffused, attaining glory and greatness

Yes, he has returned to al-Hamra after his absence;
Indeed, to the red land, after absence prolonged
so exult over all lands, O city of al-Hamra!
Returns the pride, O city adorned in redness!

Yes, he has returned, surrounded by every care,
Indeed, you've returned, graced with care benevolent
and the fair one will not lack pearls adorning her neck.
The fair lady emulates you, with pearls resplendent

O Pasha al-Tihami, possessor of high honors,
O exalted pasha, valiant and of noble trait
who, among the holders of high office, has become foremost;
Amongst men of honor, as chest for secrets prudent

whose generosity makes you forget Ma'n and Hatim,
Your generosity makes Hatim forgotten in tale
and whose fame has crossed both land and sea.
Your fame has traversed over land and over sail
تَيمَّنتَyou sought blessing at بيتَthe House of اللهِGod تَقضِيyou perform مَناسكاًrites

You sought blessing at God's House, performing sacred rites,
You've blessed Allah's house performing pilgrimage dear
with a burning longing you could not bear patiently.
With longing no patience could to fervor curtail
فأرضيتَso you pleased ربًّاa Lord قدindeed دعَاكَcalled you لبَيتِهِto His House

Thus you pleased a Lord who had summoned you to His House,
So you pleased the Lord, who summoned you to His abode
and your grandfather was gladdened when you came to visit him.
Your passion as you visited, joy He did endow

But we found consolation in the lion cub you left behind,
Yet we grieved for the lion cub you left behind
who embodied your firmness, determination, and victory.
Who resembled your wisdom, resolve and triumph avowed

No subtle point of statecraft was hidden from him,
No subtlety of politics could from him hide
so he commands them openly and watches them in secret.
Fierce against foes yet prudent with allies abide
تَبارَكَblessed is رَبُّthe Lord of العرشِthe Throne واهِبُbestower of حُكمِهHis authority

Blessed is the Lord of the Throne, who bestows His authority
Blessed is the Lord of the throne who granted him rule
upon whomever He chooses from all His creatures.
For He chooses whom He wills, with honor imbued
فماso not غِبتَyou were absent عنَّاfrom us حينwhen فيناamong us تركتَهُyou left him

You were not absent from us when you left him among us;
You left but the moon remains for the stars as guide
you were but the sun that left the full moon behind.
Poets of Egypt! For his praise I do fiercely vie
أشاعرَO poet of مِصرٍEgypt إنَّنيindeed I منكَof you غَائِرٌam jealous
تُزاحِمُyou rival فيover مَمدوحِهthe man he praises شاعرَthe poet of الحَمراal-Hamra
O poet of Egypt, I am jealous of you:
Take my heart and leave yours be, for to him I bear
you rival the poet of al-Hamra over the man he praises.
Every verse and poetry, passion I can't deny
فُؤادَكَyour Fu'ad—your heart خُذtake واتركand leave فُؤاديmy heart فإنَّنيfor I
I lead as a bride إليهto him كلَّevery قافِيةٍrhyme عَذراvirgin
Take your Fu'ad—your heart—and leave mine, for I
But composing poetry is duty bound by you
lead every virgin rhyme to him as a bride.
For you're wont to bestow pearls generously strewn
بلىyes indeed إنَّindeed قولَcomposing الشِّعرِpoetry منكَby you لواجِبٌsurely obligatory
لأنَّكَbecause you قدalready ألفَيتَhave found للدُّررِfor the pearls النَّحراthe neck
Indeed, composing poetry is surely your duty,
As scales they are balanced, behold them in equity
for you have found a neck for the pearls.
If one tilts, then the other side up will be hewn
هماthe two of them كَفَّتاthe two pans of الميزانِthe balance فانظُرso look إليهماat them both
إذاwhen رجَحتweighed heavier إحداهُماone of them طاشتِflew up الأُخرىthe other
They are the two pans of a balance, so look at them:
Pay no heed to gossip of deceitful tongues impure
when one weighs heavier, the other flies up.
Their twisting of facts with cunning and dishonest lure
ولاand do not تَستمعlisten to قولَthe words of الوشاةِthe slanderers وإفكَهُمand their lies
وتَشويهَهُمand their disfiguring وجهَthe face of الحَقائقthe truths بيagainst me مَكراin malice
And do not heed the slanderers' words or their lies,
Wicked their souls that take vice as habitual affair
or their disfiguring of truth's face in schemes against me.
If the youth's soul is wicked, in vice he is demure
فقدfor indeed خَبُثواthey became foul نفساin soul لهاfor it الشَّرُّevil حِرفةٌa trade
وإنand if خَبثَتgrows foul نفسُthe soul of الفتىthe man احترفَhe makes a trade of الشَّرَّاevil
For their souls are foul, and evil is their trade;
I won't forget, my Master, to defend my passion
and if a man's soul grows foul, he makes a trade of evil.
As they sink in their teeth and claws with blatant contortion
فلمso not أنسَI forget ياO مولايmy lord إنقاذَsaving مُهجَتيmy life
وقدand already نشبواthey sank فيinto مُهجتيmy heart النَّابَthe fang والظُّفراand the claw
I have not forgotten, my lord, your saving of my life,
Were it not for Your protection winging over me
when they had sunk fang and claw into my heart.
I'd have poisoned them all and rained flames as retribution!
ولولاand were it not for جَناحٌa wing منof حِماكyour protection يُظِلُّهُمshelters them
سَقيتُهُمُI made them drink سُمًّاpoison وأصليتُهمand made them burn جَمراembers
Were it not for a wing of your protection sheltering them,
But the sanctuary of Master is sacred, invincible
I would have made them drink poison and burn in embers.
Who can dare to even glance at it with hostility?
ولكنbut حِمىthe protection of المَولىthe lord عزيزٌinviolable مُقدَّسٌsacred
ومَنand who ذاis that الذيwho يَقوىcan ليَنظُرَهُto look at it شَزراaskance
But my lord's protection is inviolable and sacred,
You've granted me blessing, preserving me in your thoughts
and who could dare look askance at it?
Never to forget you, this I vow faithfully!
وأولَيتَنيand you bestowed on me بِراًّkindness أنَألَهُI, of it (apparently أنا له) حافظٌa keeper
وحاشاand far be it معاذrefuge in اللهِGod أنسىI forget لهof it ذِكراremembrance
You have bestowed kindness on me, of which I am a faithful keeper,
So stay as my pillar, your closeness is my life
and far be it—God forbid—that I forget to recall it.
You're to me a treasure, this is said without strife
فدُمso remain سَنَداًa support ليfor me إنَّindeed قُربَكyour nearness مُنيتيmy wish

وإنكَand indeed you ليto me كنزٌa treasure ثَمينٌprecious ولاand no فَخراboasting
So remain my support, for your nearness is my wish,
I pride myself in you, my Master and my Lord
and you are a precious treasure to me—and this is no boast.
While I am but Your poet servant, humble and contrite
وإنكَand indeed you ليto me مولىًa lord بهin whom أناI فاخِرٌtake pride
وماand not أناI إلاbut عَبدكَyour slave الشاعرَthe poet الحًرَّاthe free
And you are my lord, in whom I take pride,
The melting summer assails me, making health dire
while I am but your slave—the free poet.
I ask of you leave for a month to recover my desire
وقدand already هجمَhas assailed الصَّيفُthe summer المُذيبُthat melts away لٍِصحَّتيof my health

And summer, which melts away my health, has launched its assault
upon me; so I ask you for a month's leave.
