And is David's flute far away,

While his son's instrument is close to us?

Ribat al-Fath has had its share,

And in Marrakesh the Red there is a share.

When a father calls his son by name,

Do you not see his son sometimes answer?

I grieved for those brief moments that passed

Swiftly, just as the preacher sat down.

Such is life: meeting and parting.

And is there serenity without murk to cloud it?

    تَشِبُّ به لظىً فيها لَهِيبُُ

    So you left the heart a brother to anguish;

A blaze flares within it, full of flame.

Is all this in the strings? For I

Lose myself when David's son plays.

When the malady of despair has already beset us,

Then from his instrument's notes comes a physician.
