Ah, may God watch over the brethren who wrote to me,
Oh, may God watch over the brothers who wrote to me
While I was in the darkness of those prisons.
while I was in the darkness of those prisons.
وَفَتَحنَاand we opened كتَابَهُمtheir letter فَرَأينَاso we saw
كلَّall حُبٍّlove وكلَّand all وُدٍّaffection مَصونِkept safe
We opened their letter, and there we saw
And we opened their letter and saw
Every love and every affection, faithfully preserved.
all love and all affection, kept safe.
أطرَبُونِيthey delighted me بِقَولِهِمwith their words لَيتَهُمif only they قدhad
عَرَفُواthey knew كَمhow much بِقَولِهِمwith their words أطرَبُونِيthey delighted me
Their words transported me—if only they had
They delighted me with their words—if only they had
Known how deeply their words transported me.
known how greatly their words delighted me.
سَجَنُونِيthey imprisoned me فَأَحزنُونِيso they saddened me وَقَالُواand they said
فَلتَدُمso let endure حَالةُthe condition السَّجِينِthe prisoner الحَزِينِthe sorrowful
They imprisoned me, saddened me, and said:
They imprisoned me, so saddened me, and said:
“Let the sorrowful prisoner’s plight endure.”
"So let the sorrowful prisoner's condition endure."
