قدindeed غابَhas gone away عبدservant اللهGod عنِّيfrom me مَنwho غَداbecame
لِيfor me فيin الكَوارثِcalamities إنif دهتنِىthey befell me يَنفعُhelps
Abdullah has gone from me, he who had become
Abdullah has left me, though once my aid
my help in calamities whenever they befell me.
In times of trial, he brought me comfort.
قدindeed غَابhas vanished ليfor me بَصرِيmy sight الذيwhich بهthrough it مُبصرٌable to see
قدindeed غَابhas vanished ليfor me سمعِيmy hearing الذِيwhich بهthrough it أسمَعُI hear
Gone is my sight, by which I see.
My sight that let me see is gone away.
Gone is my hearing, by which I hear.
My hearing that allowed me listen fled.
ماwhat ضرَّنيharmed me لوif كَانhe was ليto me مُودِّعاbidding farewell
ماwhat ضرَّهُharmed him لوif أننِيthat I مُتوَدِّعُbidding farewell
What harm would it have done me had he bid me farewell?
It would not hurt had he bid me goodbye.
What harm would it have done him had I said farewell?
It would not hurt him had I bid adieu.
سَافرتَyou traveled ياO عبدَservant الإلهGod مُبكِّراearly
وتركتَand you left قلبِيmy heart بالجَوَىwith anguish يتقَطعُbeing torn apart
You departed early, O Abd al-Ilah,
Early you traveled, Abdullah, and left
and left my heart torn apart by anguish.
My heart to sever into pieces torn.
إنif لمdid not تُشَيِّعهsee him off بِعَينَىwith my eyes نظرةٌa glance
فالدمعُthen tears والذكرَىand remembrance إليهto him تُشَيّعُaccompany in farewell
If no glance from my eyes saw him off,
Unless your eyes had blessed me before leaving,
then tears and remembrance follow him in farewell.
My tears and memories would see you away.
مَاwhat حيلتِيmy recourse والجسمُand the body غابتhas departed روحُهits soul
والجسمُand the body بعدafter الروحthe soul لاdoes not يتمتَّعُtake pleasure
What recourse have I, when the body's soul has departed?
Without his soul, what can this body do?
And the body, after the soul is gone, takes no pleasure.
A body without its soul cannot delight.
ماwhat حيلَتيmy recourse والفكرُand thought عُدتَyou became صِقَالَهits polish
وصِقالُهand its polish منهfrom it حَقائقُtruths تَسطَعُshine forth
What recourse have I, when you had become the polish of thought,
Without his thoughts, what can my mind construe?
and from that polish truths shine forth?
His insights shed on truths a shining light.
لَمnot أنسَI forget مَجلسَهhis gathering الثمينَprecious وماand what بِهin it
مِنof حكمةٍwisdom عنabove غَيرهother than it تتَرفَّعrises
I have not forgotten his precious gathering and what it held
I cannot forget his counsel sublime,
of wisdom, surpassing that of others.
His wisdom towering over mortal plight.
ياO مَنyou who يُبَشِّرنيbrings me glad tidings بقُربِof the nearness of قُدومهhis arrival
أُطلُبask for حياتِيmy life إننيindeed I لاnot أمنَعI withhold
O you who bring me glad tidings of his imminent arrival,
O you who bring news of his return soon,
ask for my life; I will not withhold it.
I beg of you my life, do not deny.
قدindeed أَظلمَتhas grown dark مراكُشٌMarrakesh مِنfrom بعدِهafter him
تَتطلَّعُyou rise into view
Marrakesh has grown dark since his departure.
Since he left, darkness covers the moon,
O star of al-Hamra, will you rise?
Red planet, do you watch him from the sky?
