Abd al-Aziz, I would be your ransom

from every ill that has befallen you.

I have called you; do answer,

for you do answer whoever calls you.

    Or from answering my call—

ah, if only I knew—who has forbidden you?

You accustomed my eye to seeing

you; why, then, does my eye not see you?

Have you forgotten me and so abandoned me?

Far be it from you to forget your brother!

You left embers in my breast

that nothing but meeting you can quench.

    My heart holds so much

    searing pain over your youth.

If you could see me whenever

I sought to write an elegy for you,

and saw my tears and the

    [ink?] wrestling on the page,

you would know how you have left me

burning in a blaze from your absence.

O you who lay him in a pit

and leave him behind, over there,

do not hurry to bury him,

for perhaps movement will return to him.

Woe is me! What is this I see?

    Abd al-Aziz, is that you?

You lie stretched out in the grave,

and your cheeks rest upon the earth.

Make my heart your pillow, O

beloved, for it cannot be parted from you.

O you who loosen his shrouds,

be gentle with him—may your hands be paralyzed!

    They buried you—no, they buried

virtue, for it is one of your adornments.

No seeker of help ever cried out

    without your footsteps answering him.

And indeed, the death-herald announced the death of

praiseworthy qualities and virtues when he announced your death.

As for loyalty, O its master,

your reason makes it incumbent upon you.

    And your brother Ahmad continues,

out of his loyalty, to weep for yours.

He is restless, and his heart

is aching, and his eyelid weeps.

You found your father in him ever since

you parted from your father in childhood.
