In the keeping of the Lord, exalted in glory,

sleep, O you whom learning and wisdom have lost.

    لا طاعةٌ كَالعِلمِ والقُرآنِ

    You spent your whole life in acts of obedience;

no act of obedience equals learning and the Qur’an.

We stand around your grave, humbly bowed,

weeping for you, our eyes streaming.

We weep for you—rather, we weep for virtue; and virtue

lies wholly in obedience to the Most Merciful.

    After al-Suba‘i, Marrakech brought forth

her ‘Arabi, the eminent scholar al-Rahman.

So he added to piety and religious rulings the purity

of the sacred law of Islam and faith.

And you remained devoted to studying the sciences

and spreading them among the old and the young.

Then you held fast to your Lord’s rope, certain

that the reward would be divine favor.

The agony of death lingered in you for three [days]

only so that you might depart pure in body.

Though you vanish from eyes and gazes,

    you are surely remembered everywhere.

And you live forever in every heart,

and you are surely praised everywhere.

They bore you above their heads and wept over

you—such is the utmost effort of dear, close friends.

My grief for the community’s elder, departing

from us as the soul departs from bodies!

So our hearts were filled with sorrow for him,

and our eyes have tear-drenched lids.

So uncover his face for me once,

so I may see him again, and he may see me.

Why did you not wash his body with tears?

For tears are like an emblem of sincerity.

    واليومَ يَخبو النُّورُ في الأكفانِ

    Yesterday he was a radiant lamp for us;

and today the light dims within the shrouds.

This is the world, and this its condition:

death is the end of every mortal living being.

My Lord, O You whose bounty embraces all creation,

pour upon him clouds of forgiveness.

And grant us, O You whose pardon we hope for,

a place beside him in the Garden of divine favor.
