الكأسُ مِن دُونِ المُدامَة أكبرُ

الكأسُ مِن دُونِ المُدامَة أكبرُ

والصَّبُّ مِن مَحبُوب قَلبِه أكبَرُ

والصَّبُّ مِن مَحبُوب قَلبِه أكبَرُ

The cup, without the wine, is older still;

The cup is greater without the wine.

And the enamored lover is older than his heart’s beloved.

And the lovesick lover is older than his heart's beloved.

شاخَ الهَوى فيهم وشاخُوا في الهَوَى

شاخَ الهَوى فيهم وشاخُوا في الهَوَى

إن الصَّغير لَديهم لا يذكر

إن الصَّغير لَديهم لا يذكر

Love grew old within them, and they grew old in love;

Love has grown old in them, and they have grown old in love.

Among them, the young one goes unremembered.

Indeed, the young one goes unmentioned among them.
