مَرَّ عامٌ وأنتض يا صاحِ صَاحِ

مَرَّ عامٌ وأنتض يا صاحِ صَاحِ

ومعَ الرَّاحِ لم تَعُد في كِفاحٍ

ومعَ الرَّاحِ لم تَعُد في كِفاحٍ

A year has passed, and you, my friend, are sober.

A year has passed, and you have bloomed, O companion of youth

And you no longer struggle with wine.

Yet with the winds, you are no longer in struggle

قد شرِبتُ المدامُ دهرا طويلاً

قد شرِبتُ المدامُ دهرا طويلاً

في صَباحي وغُدوَتي ورَواحي

في صَباحي وغُدوَتي ورَواحي

I have drunk wine for a long time,

For long have I drank the wine

In my mornings, my morning outings, and my evening outings;

In my mornings, evenings, and respites

واصطبَاحٍ واصلتُه باغتِباقٍ

واصطبَاحٍ واصلتُه باغتِباقٍ

واغتباقٍ واصلتُه باصطِبَاحِ

واغتباقٍ واصلتُه باصطِبَاحِ

And morning drinking I linked with evening drinking,

Connecting sobriety with intoxication

And evening drinking I linked with morning drinking,

And intoxication with sobriety

من مُدامٍ كأنما عصرُوها

من مُدامٍ كأنما عصرُوها

من خُدود المِلاح وقتَ المِزاح

من خُدود المِلاح وقتَ المِزاح

Of wine, as though they had pressed it

Wine that seems to have been pressed

From beauties’ cheeks in moments of jest.

From the cheeks of beauties in playful times

ونَدامى كأنما نَدِموا عمَّا

ونَدامى كأنما نَدِموا عمَّا

قضَوه من عُمرِهم في الصَّلاح

قضَوه من عُمرِهم في الصَّلاح

And drinking companions, as though they regretted what

And my drinking companions seem to regret

They had spent of their lives in righteousness.

What they spent their lives doing in piety

فرأوا في المًُبَاحِ كلَّ حرَامٍ

فرأوا في المًُبَاحِ كلَّ حرَامٍ

ورأوا في الحَرامِ كلَّ مُباح

ورأوا في الحَرامِ كلَّ مُباح

So they saw in the permissible all that was forbidden,

So they saw in the permitted every sin

And they saw in the forbidden all that was permissible.

And saw in the sinful every permitted act
