أَرَأيتَHave you seen اللِّئامَthe vile كيفhow تَكونُthey are
وعليهمand to them كيفhow الذِّمامthe bonds of honor تهونُare of little account
Have you seen what the vile are like,
Have you seen the despicable, how they behave?
and how little bonds of honor mean to them?
And how little shame concerns them?
سَأريكَI will show you الهِجاءَinvective كيفhow يكونُit is
ياخَؤونٌO treacherous one لِعَهدِهِto his pledge ياO خَؤُونُtreacherous one
I will show you what invective is like:
I will show you how satire can be,
O betrayer of his pledge, O betrayer!
O unfaithful to your word, o unfaithful one,
هكذاthus قَدَّرَdecreed الإلهُGod عَلَينَاfor us
مَعشَرَcompany of الشُّعراءِthe poets حيثُwherever نَكونُwe are
Thus has God decreed for us,
Thus has God ordained for us,
we poets, wherever we may be.
We poets, wherever we may be.
