I long for Egypt, though I am not from Egypt.
I yearn for Egypt though I am not Egyptian
But the bird of the heart knows its nest best.
But the bird of my heart knows best its nest

If not for my love of Egypt and her people
I would not have been in one country and come to be in another.
I'd not have been in Qatar nor lived in Qatar

A country whose people enjoy their fortune
And a land trailing its hem in green robes.
A land trailing its dress in green plants

A land where Islam holds its head high
And she has hoisted above it the banner of victory.
And above it the banner of victory is tied

If I said my love for my homeland surpassed my love for her,
And if I said my love for my homeland surpasses my love for it
I would make an open claim that my secret heart contradicted.
I'd be a brother of deceit, my secret self differing

And I have not found among its people other than a master
Whose face shone with cheerfulness and gladness.
Whose face shines with amiability and good news

It shows you among the flags of eloquence in its meadow
Nightingales—if nightingales could sing enchantment.
Songs that would sing with sorcery if songs could be sorcerous

When the pens sway their flanks upon the page,
When their pens stir in the inkwells
In their hands, they suffice instead of bright swords and dusky spears.
Their hands sing of whites and browns

And if the night of a ruler of black nights darkens
Then among them the faces of counsel unveil a full moon.
The faces of opinion from them dawn like full moons

As oceans—if the sea were free from ebb.
Seas have poured forth, as if the sea were devoid of islands

Shall I move from Egypt and head west
Misery, by the life of the True One, for the free poet?
Wretchedness, by God, befits the free poet!

Yes, it is my grave! Yes, it is my grave!

No grave contains aught but death and desolation
And both are found in a life of constraint and oppression.
And those are in the living of coercion and compulsion

Love of Egypt made me forget love of a homeland that has become
My love for Egypt humanized me, my love for a homeland has
A place where forsaking it is my union, and union with it my estrangement.
In leaving it, joined me; and in joining it, left me

Spread its wings and fluttered like an eagle

Until it fell; now it has settled at the bottom.
Until it fell, and now it has hit bottom

We closed our eyelids upon the cradle of delusion,
We closed our eyes on the cradle of conceit
But the wronged man never closes an eyelid over an unavenged wrong.
No grieving one closes an eye gently on the bowstring

They made their grudges the judges when they took control,
And they made their hatreds arbitrate when they took control
So they were base in litigation, men of guile.
So they were wicked in litigation, scheming

A spark of yearning tortures me
So I seek refuge in remembrance, and it flares up from embers.
So I panic for the memory, and it kindles from ember

What recourse has one overpowered in his affairs?
The overwhelmed has no stratagem against his affair

Yet its changing fortunes through time are like the sea:
But it is like the sea in fate's alternation
If the sea's flood tide lasts long, an ebb is inevitable.
If the sea's tide lengthens, the ebb is inevitable

Excuse me, I implore you, and know

That I, by God's truth, most deserve excuse

But the molten essence of emotions in verse.
But the melting of passions in poetry
