إنَّهُ الخَطُّ فِتنَةُ الأبصارِ
O son of Abd al-Salam, be gentle with the eye.
O son of Abdus Salam, gently move your eyes,
Indeed, this calligraphy is an enchantment to the eyes.
For the script is tempting to the sights.

Any eye that sees your right hand's writing
What eye beholds a graceful line,
then ceases, because of it, to see.
And does not turn away from seeing sights?

مِن سوادٍ منها ومن أشفَارِ
Is the ink of the letters, together with their vowel marks,
The letters' flow with vowels
drawn from that eye's blackness and its lashes?
Of blackness, some apparent, some hidden.

Abu Muqla, then, is what we shall call
By He who owns the eye, we will call
you, while Ibn Muqla is clothed in a robe of shame.
The son of Muklla robed in shame.
