يَاOh رَبَّhow many a غٌُربةٍexile بِتُّهاI spent the night in it
وعرَفتُand I came to know فيهاin it لَيلةَthe night الغُربَاءِof strangers
Oh, how many a night of exile I have spent,
O Lord, I am a stranger in exile
And in it I came to know the night of strangers.
And I have known in it the night of strangers
وافيتُI reached وادِيthe valley الخَوفِof fear فيin ظَلمَائهاits darkness
وعَبَرتُهand I crossed it فيin تِلكُمُthat الظَّلمَاءِthe darkness
I reached the valley of fear in its darkness,
I have come to the valley of fear in its darkness
And crossed it in that darkness.
And crossed it in that darkness
والبرقُand the lightning يُغمِدُsheathes سَيفَهُits sword ويُسلُّهand draws it
وبريقُهُand its gleam متساطِعُflashing brightly الَّلالاءِradiance
And lightning sheathes its sword and draws it,
The lightning sheathes its sword and unsheathes it
And its gleam blazes with radiance.
Its glare scattered flashes
وكأنمَاand as though المرِّيخُMars فيin كَبِدِthe heart السَّماof the sky
يَرنُوgazes إلىَّat me بنظرةٍwith a look شَزرَاءِhostile and sidelong
And as though Mars, in the heart of the sky,
As if Mars in the liver of the sky
Gazes at me with a hostile, sidelong look.
Glances at me with a fiery look
أمشِيI walk علىwith حذَرٍcaution بهin it مُتَرِّبصاًkeeping watch
فكانِنَّيso, as though I أمشِيI walk علىwith استحياءِshyness
I walk warily within it, keeping watch,
I walk cautiously wary of it
So it is as though I walk shyly.
As if I walk in shame
مَاwhat لِيis with me أُلازِمُI keep to وَحدتَِيmy solitude فيin غُربَتِيmy exile
أعظِمhow great بهاit is مِنas غُربةٍexile وبَلاءِand affliction
Why do I keep to my solitude in my exile?
Why do I persist in my solitude in exile?
How grievous an exile and affliction it is!
I suffer from it more than from exile and affliction
لاَمُواthey laid blame علَىon الأبناءِthe sons فيin جهلٍignorance بِهِمof them
ولَوَand if انصَفواthey had been fair لاَمُواthey would have laid blame عَلىon الآباءِthe fathers
They laid blame on the sons, in ignorance of them;
They blamed the sons in ignorance of them
And had they been fair, they would have laid blame on the fathers.
If they were fair, they would blame the fathers
