    If, then, you desire the guidance of the imams,

    Then steel yourself for calamities to assail you,

    With a dignified soul before every misfortune,

    And a patient heart, standing guard within the breast.

    وسركَ مكتومٌ لدى الربِّ ذائعُ

    Your tongue is sorrowful, and your gaze inspired;

    And your secret is concealed, yet manifest before the Lord;

    وثغركَ بسامٌ وبطنكَ جائعٌ

    And your name is obscure, and your door closed;

    And your mouth is ever smiling, and your belly hungry;

    وفضلك مدفونٌ وطعنك شائعُ

    And your heart is wounded, and your market stagnant;

    And your merit is buried, and disparagement of you widespread.

    And every day you swallow a choking sorrow

    From time and brethren, while the heart willingly submits.

    وليلك شوقٌ غابَ عنهُ الطلائعُ

    Your day is spent on people's affairs, without reminding them of your favors;

    And your night is longing, with the scouts out of sight.

    So here is this night for you: take its measure,

    For a scowling day when avenues of recourse are scarce.
