I entrust my affair to the Lord of lofty majesty,

concerning a guest persistent in his visits.

    A burdensome guest, unwanted,

    forever flowing and coursing.

A guest who storms in like the master of the house,

    without announcement or permission.

it a fortified lodging for his visit.

I no longer know: is it in my own face

or in his that two doors have been opened?

    أيَخافُ أنه لا يُرَى بِعِيانِ

    He stays before you, never leaving his place;

does he fear he will not be plainly seen?

Do not let his coming out deceive you when he comes:

for he reverses the realities of things.

His departure means that no trace of him is seen,

while his coming out is his arrival.

Why have I been afflicted with him, loathsome and red,

like an ember heated in fires?

If he vanishes from me a while, it is for a round

he will make before peering in like a jailer.

Around me the spray of his gore lies scattered,

as though I were in a battlefield arena,

or the drinkers' courtyard, their cup carried round,

    brimming full, by trembling fingers.

Or are those rose petals scattered

in a garden visited by the faces of singing girls?

And with my nose bleeding, I seem

    a dropper of Nu'man's anemones.

I understood the secret of his rage and excused him,

a bull in the Spaniards' arena.

The earth has fashioned itself a twilight glow from my blood,

like the horizon after a cloud's pouring rain.

I have kept away from every Nu'man; I am not

even concerned with the jurisprudence of Nu'man's companion.

Two seas meet in my face, and between

them lie the twin barriers of a perfectly formed isthmus.

Two seas, yet from them there emerge

no pearls for me, only molten coral.

does he imagine I fear abandonment?

hateful, like grit that dims both eyes.

It meets you with embracing, encircling, and

    staring, kissing, and affection.

I see as al-Sulayk whenever he sees me.
