بِمُعَذَّرٍby a downy-cheeked youth حُلوِsweet اللُّمَىthe lips’ dusky hue
My heart has become enthralled
My heart has become an orphan
By a downy-cheeked youth with sweet, dusky lips.
With an excuse that is sweetly blind
أضنَىhe made languish فُؤادىmy heart عِندماwhen
لاحظتُهI glanced at him فَتَبَسَّماand then he smiled
He made my heart languish when
My heart became gloomy when
I glanced at him and he smiled.
I noticed it smiling
وخلاand became deserted المكانُthe place فَسَلَّمَاso he greeted
And the place became deserted, so he greeted me.
And the place became empty and bid farewell
And I approached him eagerly
ودنوتُand I drew near منهُto him مُقبلاًto kiss

And I drew near him to kiss him,
But I saw him frown
But I saw him recoil in alarm.
And here he is, he turned away

And he pointed: 'Here he is—he is approaching!'
And the guard appeared, so I said
And the watcher appeared, so I said:
May the guard be safe from blindness

'May the watcher be spared blindness!'
