You have a mouth like pearls set in carnelian,

and saliva like honey or pure wine.

You glory in beauty, with every share of beauty

    ample in every subtle feature.

And you stand alone in the beauty that has left

    you lonely, without a companion.

Your eyes have burdened me with what I could never

bear even in part, in my love for them.

And they have made me drink cups of what they pass around,

from which I shall never sober as long as I live.

O you who begrudge me even sleep

that offers hope of a phantom visiting by night:

by the glances with which you never cease

to pierce my heart, and by your graceful stature,

do not be jealous in al-Ghuwayr when there sway

the curving flanks of every leafy bough.

And turn aside the crimson rose of your cheeks and hide

it, or else the anemone's heart will split.
