Were it not for flashes of lightning gleaming at al-ʿAqīq,

Coming over its fringes each morning and returning each evening,

My heart would not have grown more anguished—no, nor

Would my streaming tears have bloodied my cheeks.

Alas for the east wind! How long shall I be reminded of youth

By a breeze from it, wafting like perfume?

It glided past, while its fragrance had been bestowed on us

By al-Ghuwayr's laurel, its rand trees, and wormwood.

O you I loved on the day at Kāẓima—is not

My beautiful patience without union with you ugly?

You departed and left a soul within my heart,

Which wounding and torment have destroyed.

    لا أرتضيهِ لأنَّهُ مَجروحُ

    My heart bears witness that you have kept my covenant;

I do not accept it as a witness, for it is wounded.

Who will bring me a dream-vision of you if I close

My eye, to help me bear sorrow and bring relief?

You made me hope for union, yet I have nothing

But rejection from you and departure.

Here are the eyelids—yet where is sleep

In them? And here is the body—where is the soul?
