Turn aside when you hear the sounds of the bells,
Marvel when you hear the bells' voices
From the monastery's side, beneath the night, with the pale camels.
From the monastery's side in the night's darkness

And unload in the courtyard of Yuhanna and his companion,
And descend into John's courtyard and his friend
Tuma, and Luqa, and Kurka, then Kirkis.
Thomas, Luke, and Mark, then Kerkis

Inquiring about a clear, chestnut-colored wine,
Asking about the pure, refined color
That people have already aged in the burial vaults.
That people have freed in the churches

Time has passed over it, so it tells
What Adam and Iblis did long ago.
What was with Adam first, and Iblees

You see the monks fallen in awe of it
When it appears between a deacon and a priest.
When it appears between deacon and priest

The Gospels are recited in reverence when you are present,
The Gospels are recited honoring it
In its honor, with the noblest praise and sanctification.
When you attend with the noblest glorification and sanctification

It grew clear, delicate, and delightful; it possesses purity,
It is refined and delicate, so it is of pure frankincense
And in description rises above flaw and defilement.
Excelling in description, without fault or stain

It has tales that it relates when mixed
In its cup, about Sulayman and Bilqis.
In its cup, about Solomon and Balqis

If the herd's gazelle tasted a mere mouthful of it,
If the doe of the flock tasted it rinsed
The lion of the thicket would fear its fierce assault.
She would fear her spotted, despised mate

A full moon in the darkness, one of the monastery's Christians, hastens with it,
The monastery's Christians hurry with it at night's first darkness
Swaying among youths like peacocks.
Sneaking to youths like wandering stars

So ward off with it time's harsh misfortunes, seizing your chance,
So turn away the turns of fate's sermons with it, seizing
As long as the sun remains with those little suns.
What remains of sun with those candlesticks

And beware the monastery's stingy sexton
The cup of wine—unless your purse is empty.
With the cup of alcohol, though empty of purse
