هذاthis كِتابُa letter مُتيَّمٍone enslaved by love مُشتاقِyearning
هذا كِتابُ مُتيَّمٍ مُشتاقِ
قَلقٍrestless عَراهُseized him لاعِجُthe burning ache الأَشواقِlongings
قَلقٍ عَراهُ لاعِجُ الأَشواقِ
This is the letter of a love-stricken, yearning man,
This is the book of a longing lover
Restless, seized by the burning ache of longing.
Anxious, whom desire has left bare
يَشتَاقُhe longs for جِيراناًneighbors لَهُof his منfrom جِلَّقٍJillaq
يَشتَاقُ جِيراناً لَهُ من جِلَّقٍ
ويَهَيهمُand he murmurs (reading uncertain) منfrom وَجدٍpassionate anguish رَكوُبَriding سِياقِdeath throes
ويَهَيهمُ من وَجدٍ رَكوُبَ سِياقِ
He longs for neighbors of his from Jillaq,
He yearns for companions of wit
And murmurs in passionate anguish, riding into death's throes.
And reproaches those who mounted the steed of destiny
وَيسائلُand he asks البرقَthe lightning اللَّمُوعَgleaming علىover الحِمَىthe sanctuary
وَيسائلُ البرقَ اللَّمُوعَ على الحِمَى
عَنهُمabout them بِقلبِwith a heart مُدنَفٍgravely ailing خَفَّاقٍthrobbing
عَنهُم بِقلبِ مُدنَفٍ خَفَّاقٍ
And asks the gleaming lightning over the sanctuary
He asks the weeping lightning on the hot sand
About them, with an ailing, throbbing heart.
About them, with a pounding, fluttering heart
وَيَسُحُّand he pours down سُحبَclouds الدَّمعِof tears بعدafter فراقِهِمparting from them
وَيَسُحُّ سُحبَ الدَّمعِ بعد فراقِهِم
منfrom فائِضthe overflow العَبَراتِteardrops والأَحداقِand the eyes
من فائِض العَبَراتِ والأَحداقِ
And pours down clouds of tears after parting from them,
And he wipes away the clouds of tears after their absence
From the overflow of teardrops and eyes.
From an excess of grief and overflowing eyelids
وَيَودُّand he wishes لَوif only عَادَwould return الزَّمانُtime بِقُربِهِمwith them near
وَيَودُّ لَو عَادَ الزَّمانُ بِقُربِهِم
يَوماًfor one day ولاand not يَبلُوهُafflicts him يومُa day فِراقِof parting
يَوماً ولا يَبلُوهُ يومُ فِراقِ
And wishes time would return with them near,
He wishes time would return with their nearness
For one day, and no day of parting would afflict him.
One day without reaching the day of their separation
