They left me, the day they departed in late morning,
They left behind when they parted a blazing
a heart that never escapes torment,
breast that will not abandon the wilds.

and eyelids that, over beautiful maidens
And eyelids over a lovely neighbor
like figurines, send blood streaming down the cheeks.
like statues with blood flowing down their cheeks.

فيat اللِّوىal-Liwa ذلكَthat الفراقُseparation لقاءَa meeting
On the day of their parting, the day they left,
Between us came a day when they left
at al-Liwa, that separation became a meeting.
and in that twisting separation was a meeting.

They departed; within the curtained chambers were full moons,
They departed while their cheeks still held
radiant, clothing the darkness in light.
a light that clothed the darkness in radiance.

Each young beauty, fair as the sun—how many
Each white cheek like the sun—how many
brown, straight spears bar the way to her fruit!
dark-complexioned ones it sheltered from Sa'dah.

Like a fawn in eye and neck—who would help me
Like fresh dates, soft and plump—if only
if I sipped wine from her dusky lips?
I could sip the water from their ripeness.

Her glance finds healing from sickness—how strange
A glance from them would cure any sickness
to hope for a cure from someone ill!
with a draught from the Lord of remedy.

مِcompletion of the split word 'the people' صباحاًin the morning صَوبُdownpour الحَياthe rain ومساءَand in the evening
May the land where the people's camp has settled be drenched,
The land poured forth where they tarried
morning and evening, by the downpour of rain.
morning to evening in the bloom of life.

And may rain clothe their land, with its persistent showers
The rain clothed their land in green
and its morning rains, in a luxuriant meadow.
and filled their valleys with melody.

I do not accuse them of breaking pledges—
I will not blame them for breaking vows
far apart or near, only of faithfulness.
whether near or far—only fidelity.
