They have turned away, and their estrangement has no cause.
They turned away, though I know not why,
And whenever my heart freely offers contentment, they grow angry.
Each time my heart is kind, they angry grow.

I would ransom them, whether they forget my pledge or remember it,
I'd ransom them, though our pact they deny,
with my two eyes, whether they go far away or draw near;
If they but mentioned me, be it high or low.

And whether they are just in love or unjust,
Be they most just or unjust in love's span,
and appease the love-distraught, yearning lover or reproach him.
Or blame the smitten one, or him who withdrew,

I fell in love with them while the boughs of life were leafy,
I clung to them when life's boughs burgeoned and ran
well-watered, and the robes of youth were new.
With sap, and the days of youth were fresh with dew,

No—by the kindness they bestowed on me
No, by Him from whom came the boon of their grace,
long ago—and this is an oath whose due must be honored—
By hand and troth, their due cannot be ignored,

May a dense cloud traveling by night drench their dwelling places;
Their signposts stood though the campfire died apace
within it, the fringes of lightning blaze all night.
And lightning flickers spawned by the clouds were stored

And may their land never be shunned, while the earth is drought-stricken,
In the skies above their land, which never ran dry
by a cloud whose hem trails through the dust.
Though barren, with roots in its dirt reaching the sky.
