شَوقيmy longing الذيwhich ألقىI endure ووجديand my lovesick anguish
The dwellers in Najd do not share
The people of Najd have no longing like mine,
the longing I endure and my anguish.
Which I have expressed, and like my intimate friend's.
ياO جيرةًneighbors بلوىat the bend of النَّقاthe sand dune
هلwhether نلتَقيwe meet منfrom بَعدِafter بُعدِseparation
O neighbors at the bend of the sand dune,
O neighbor who shares in my torment of separation!
will we meet after separation?
Will we ever meet again after this distance?
أقوىbecame deserted لبُعدِكُمbecause of your absence الحِمَىthe protected pasture
وَذُراand the tops of الأَراكِthe arak trees وَلَيسَand it does not يُجديavail
The protected pasture grew desolate in your absence,
Your absence makes my yearning all the stronger,
and the arak treetops too—yet it is of no avail.
So leave these encampments, which are no remedy!
وشكَتand lamented حمائمُdoves دَوحِهِits spreading trees
ماwhat قَدalready شَكَاlamented للِدَّمعِto the tears خَدِّيmy cheek
And the doves of its spreading trees lamented
The doves of Dawhah have told
what my cheek had already lamented to tears.
What my tear-stained cheek has confided.
وَبَكىand wept لفقدكُمُat losing you أَسىًin sorrow
ماwhatever فيهِin it منof بانٍban trees (moringa) وَرَندِand rand trees (laurel)
And in sorrow at losing you, there wept
For your loss I weep with inconsolable grief,
all the ban and rand trees within it.
In which there is no ostentation or affectation.
كُنتُمyou were لهُfor it الأُنسَthe solace الذيthat

You were for it the solace that
You were the intimate companionship for me
was mine when we were close.
That, when we gathered together, was always with me.
أصبحَتُI have become منbecause of كَلفيmy ardent love بِكُمfor you
والفَخرُand pride ليis mine كَأقلِّlike the lowliest عبدِslave
Through my ardent love for you, I have become
Through my devotion to you I have become,
like the lowliest slave—and this is my pride.
Though I am the lowliest slave, a source of pride.
علقتclung بكُمto you روحيmy soul هوىًin love

ياoh ليتهاif only it ظَفِرَتhad won بِسَعدِgood fortune
My soul clung to you in love;
I have bound my soul to love of you,
oh, if only it had won good fortune!
Would that it had attained what it hoped for!
عُودواreturn فإِنand if حالَstood in the way الزَّمَاtime (continued in the next line)
نُending of 'time' فَعلِّلواthen soothe قَلبيmy heart بِوَعدِwith a promise
Return; and if time stands in the way,
Return, for when adversity prolongs its stay,
then soothe my heart with a promise.
Make my heart patient with a promise.
فَمَتىso whenever ذَكرتُI mention سِواكُمُanyone other than you
يوماًon any day فأَنتمُthen you جُلُّthe chief part of قَصديmy intent
So whenever I mention anyone other than you,
Whenever I remember anyone but you,
on any day, it is you I chiefly mean.
Then you are the goal of all my intentions.
