جاءَتshe came إِليكَto you قُبيلَjust before الصُّبحِdawn تَخترقُcutting through
صباًan east wind لهاshe has فيin تَهاديَthe gentle swaying of سَيرِهاher course قَلقُrestlessness
She came to you just before dawn, cutting through—
She came to you before dawn, penetrating
an east wind, restless in her gently swaying course.
A morning breeze for her in the undulation of her journey, restless
مرَّتshe passed علىover شَرفِthe high ground of الواديthe valley فحينَand when سرَتshe journeyed by night
نجديَّةًfrom Najd ضاعَwafted منهاfrom her منَدَلٌsandalwood عَبِقُfragrant
She passed over the valley's heights; when she journeyed by night,
She passed by the edge of the valley, so when she walked
a wind from Najd, fragrant sandalwood wafted from her.
Najdiyyah, her scarf was lost, fragrant
قدalready حُملِّتshe was laden منfrom عريبِa little Arab clan المُنحنَىthe bend نَفساًa breath
تَكادُalmost منهُfrom it فُروعُthe boughs of البانِthe bān trees تَحترِقُcatch fire
She had been laden with a breath from the little Arab clan at the bend;
She was carried from the bend of the litter, a soul
the bān boughs almost catch fire from it.
That almost burnt the branches of acacia
عَليلَةًfaint عَللَّتshe soothed قلبيmy heart العَليلَailing بمِاwith what
فيwithin طيِّهاher folds منof حديثٍa tale نشرهُits telling حُرقُburning pangs
Faint, she soothed my ailing heart with
Ailing, she made my ailing heart sick with what
the tale enfolded in her, whose telling is burning anguish.
In her folds, of a tale spread by burning
بَرقٌlightning تأَلَّقَflashed منfrom نحوَيthe two sides of سَريرتِهاher secret heart
وهناًlate at night فسالتand so streamed بهbecause of it الآماقُthe eye-corners والبُرقُand the stony sands
Was it lightning that flashed from either side of her secret heart,
Lightning flashed from my pillow, her sleepliness,
late at night, setting eyes and stony sands streaming?
And from it valleys and lightning poured
أمor قدindeed ألمَّcame visiting بكَto you الطَّيفُthe phantom الطَّروقُnight-visiting فمُذand ever since
أَغشاكَhas enveloped you حرُّthe heat الأَنفُسِof souls العَرِقُsweat-laden
Or has the night-visiting phantom come to you, and ever since
Or did the passionate specter touch you so
the sweat-laden heat of souls has enveloped you?
Since the heat of souls covered you, sweating
بلrather قدindeed أرقتَyou poured out دموعَthe tears of العينِthe eye فانبجستand so they gushed
ماnot يَطرُقُvisits by night الطيَّيفُthe phantom صباًa lovesick lover شأنُهwhose lot is الأَرقُsleeplessness
Rather, you have poured out the eye's tears, and they gushed forth:
Rather, you have lost the tears of the eye, so poured out
no phantom visits a lovesick lover whose lot is sleeplessness.
What the specter pours out morning, whose nature is restless
أَهلُthe people of الهوَىlove ماnot لَقُواthey suffered ماwhat قدindeed لقيِتُI suffered بكمbecause of you
مَنof الصبَّابةِardent yearning والتَّبريحِand torment ماfor as long as عَشقواthey have loved
Lovers have not suffered what I have suffered through you
O people of passion! You have not found what I have found in you
of yearning and torment, in all the time they have loved.
Of morning drink and separation - they did not love
ماwhat ليwith me أرَىI see اللَّيلَthe night قدalready شابَتhave turned white ذوائبهُits tresses
وقدand already جلاhas dispelled غسقاًdarkness منfrom صبحِهُits dawn فَلقُdaybreak
Why do I see the night with its tresses turned white,
Why do I see the night has grayed its tresses
and the break of its dawn having dispelled the darkness,
And the darkness cleared from its dawn, bare
والدَّوحَand the great trees بالوُروقِwith foliage قدalready مالتhave bent معاطِفهُits limbs
وقدand already كساهُhas clothed it جديدَfresh النيَّرةِthe loom's weave الورَقُthe leaves
and the great trees with their limbs bent under foliage,
The wild rose with tassels bent, its cloaks
and leaves having clothed them in a freshly woven garment,
And the fresh leafiness dressed it, green
والجوُّand the air يختَرقُpenetrates الأرجاءضthe reaches عاطرُfragrant
كأنَّas though فيهِwithin it سَحيقَpowdered النَّدِaromatic incense يَحترِقُis burning
and the air, fragrant as it penetrates every quarter,
The air pierces the expanse, fragrant
as though powdered incense were burning within it?
As if the aroma of Nadd is burning in it
لاno شكَّdoubt أنَّthat الصبَّاthe east wind قدindeed حَدَّثتshe has told خبراًnews
أَضحتhas come to علىupon صِدقهِits truth الأكوانُall creation تتفَِّقُagree
Surely the east wind has imparted news
No doubt the morning breeze has brought news
whose truth all creation has come to affirm.
The universes became certain of its sincerity, agreeing
