Seek the wineskin's blood at dawn, with flutes and oud.

And drink, for the scent of aloeswood wafts from it.

Do you not see it gushing at the wineskin's throat,

Pouring through a slit vein of the wine-strainer?

And the rooster, in delight, has roused the sleepers

To the morning, with clapping and song.

And the vanguard of dawn's army has charged,

Gray steeds against night's black steed, driven off.

And the pitcher laughed aloud, so the cup smiled,

Revealing neatly arrayed pearls of water-bubbles.

Rise; let us go to the priest's monastery and knock at its door,

For we have grown thirsty for the water of grape-clusters.

Let us ask him for a sunlike draught of the wine stored away

By the bishops for nativity feasts.

From that wine whose sanctity the monks revered,

And from which the priest gave Communion to everyone baptized.

From her who grew old unmarried in her cask for ages:

She existed before Adam ever came to be.

But for her fine essence, long repose would almost have made her

Become like a vanished fancy among fancies.

Her robes, on Easter day, are carried

By the priests' hands; thus she was the joy of the feast.

And they processed around her with the Gospel, out of joy

In her, and circled with reverence and glorification.

They prayed over her and circled her tavern

For a long age, with tuneful chanting and repetition.

So if they give us drink, we shall drink of their wine,

A cup that tells the days of youth: 'Return!'
